Anyone know if they'll make it a museum hopefully here in Massachusetts.

being dismantled 809................ I'm actually looking forward to checking it out this weekend.

Worked down there today and will be down there all weekend, I'm hoping to get on myself. I missed out on it last time. If you are going down this weekend get there early. Last time it was here they stopped tours on the sunday at noon because there was already a 4 hour wait.

Such a shame. It would be a nice addition to the U.S.S. Massachusetts down in Battleship Cove.

I know, what a freaking shame. Well let's hope the RI Air and Space Museum will get their carrier at least and start the museum soon.

So did anyone make it on over the weekend?

Tried to go down their on Saturday, but when we were on the T they made an announcement that it was closed due to the crowd.

Posted by: Sniper

I showed my CMPSA badge and went straight to the front of the line........ While I was there I expressed interest in buying some of the Commo equipment once the ship is decommissioned. Soon I'll be able to talk to the Red October from my basement in Uxbridge !!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah it was too bad, cause they ended up opening up the line later in the day. When they opened up sat morning they didn't have enough metal detectors, thats why they shut it down cause it was moving so slow. On Sunday the line was over a mile long. It was pretty crazy...

too bad were at that point..that you need so much security, pretty soon it'll be just as bad going to anything public.

Blind man spurns JFK tour offer, demands apology
By Jessica Fargen
Boston Herald Health & Medical Reporter
Tuesday, March 6, 2007 - Updated: 01:31 AM EST

A blind South Boston man refused to set foot on the USS John F. Kennedy yesterday after the Navy offered him a private tour, and instead demanded an apology for being denied the opportunity this weekend because he is blind.
“People who are blind want full participation in society,” said Mika Pyyhkala, 34, one day after the Navy, citing safety concerns, refused to let him on the USS JFK with the rest of the public.
Pyyhkala said he wants an apology, not a “segregated” go-around of the aircraft carrier, which saw 51,000 visitors this past weekend.
Navy Lt. Paul Brawley said Pyyhkala never returned his call yesterday offering a tour of the JFK, which is being decommissioned this month. It was scheduled to depart Boston today after an unexpected 24-hour delay.
Brawley said there weren’t enough crew members to personally escort Pyyhkala Sunday afternoon. The Navy had 800 crew members to manage hourly crowds of 3,500 visitors.
Brawley stopped short of apologizing, but said the Navy regretted that Pyyhkala felt treated unfairly.
“We feel sorry that he felt we were discriminating against him,” Brawley said. “It was a matter of safety.”
The National Federation of the Blind has vowed to take action against the Navy, claiming they violated the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
“We are investigating legal action under federal law and state law,” said John Pare, a spokesman for the National Federation of the Blind. “There’s no question the law was broken.”
Brawley said that had Pyyhkala been accompanied, he probably would have been allowed on board.
Peter Smith, another blind Boston man, said he had no trouble touring the ship on Saturday, when he had two people with him. He said he also toured a Navy ship two years ago without incident.
“The Navy has been very good to me,” he said.

This pisses me off. What does the guy expect? He falls down a flight of stairs or overboard into the water, what happens then? It's a liability thing. The ship is 50 years old, has hundreds of tight quarters and hallways and many things that you cannot touch even by accident. Should the parents of every child under 6 be given an apology and private tour because their children weren't allowed on board for basically the same reasons?

Man Overboard !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Capt. Kirk

I saw this guy, he came by himself WTF! I don't think he has a case, it's military, they make their own rules. I went up on the flight deck and felt like I was gonna blow over. People kill me, always lookin for a way to make a buck!

I can't tell you how many people showed up with kids under 6. I kept turning them away. Some of them were pissed but it was on the news and in the papers not to mention on a sign @ beginning of the line.

I read it was being decommissioned in Florida, then going to the Inactive Ships Facility in Philadelphia. The Navy typically keeps old carriers for 10 or more years before selling them for scrap. If you go to the Naval Station in Newport, RI you can see the Forrestal and Saratoga berthed there. They've both been decommissioned for over 10 years;

just an interesting fact I came across....

USS FORRESTAL's two anchors are now part of the USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) and the FORRESTAL's four propellers became part of the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) during its overhaul from 1993 to 1995.

You know how the military hates to waste stuff like that. When I was in the first Gulf War, our initial 5.56 ammunition issue was manufactured in 1967.
