For two months, Jacob Sevlie's insurance company tagged along whenever he slid behind the wheel of his Honda Accord.

An electronic monitor the size of a matchbook closely tracked Sevlie's driving time and behavior. If he had a heavy foot or was a sudden braker, the auto data recorder would betray him.

Sounds like BS to me...if the device is plugged into a diagnostic port then it will only read vehicle data and be unable to correlate that with your location or other environmental circumstances.

I mean, if you have one of these things, you live next to a highway, and your place of employment is right off an exit, then your average speed is going to come out to like 60 MPH. Now if you just make little trips around town all day long, you're going to have an average speed of about 30. Does this mean that the first example has a "lead foot" and will pay higher rates? Look at the frequency of crashes in an urban setting as opposed to on a limited access highway? Does sudden braking indicate a risk or does it indicate reflexes to avoid a crash? "Better run over that squirrel, Martha, we don't want our rates to go up!"

A device of this nature seems totally useless in setting consumer rates, ultimately it will be bastardized into another way for the insurance companies to dig a little deeper into the public's pockets. The only useful purpose I see is to gather data in the event of a claim, where such information could actually provide data to support an investigation.

Another example of insurance companys being the whores that they are.

Why don't we all just bend over and take a giant probe That way every insurance, medical and govern-mental agency can track our every move.
Just a thought

Thats fine with me because I think after one or 2 good nights out with my alcohol intake, it will kill that probe.
