The Fraternal Order of Police also has a legal defense fund that costs members only $215 per. year. The Legal Plan covers police officers for all administrative, criminal & civil actions taken against them. One of the best features of the FOP legal plan is that you can pick your own attorney. The legal plan already has some prominent attorneys on the plan, including Doug Lewison's firm. Also McNelley, Barnicle & Nugent (all retired Boston Police Officers). If you have an attorney that you want on the plan, just have him or her join the plan and you will be covered 100% .
Recently the entire Boston Police Detective's Benv. Society (340+ strong) joined the FOP for the sole reason of joining the FOP legal plan. The FOP legal plan has paid out as much as $100,000.00 in lawyers fees for FOP members. The FOP Legal Plan is supporting the New Orleans Police Officers that are on trial right now. This is over a 4 million dollar ERISA plan that is well established. Check the FOP legal plan by going to www.fop.net , then clicking on "Programs" & go down to Legal Plan. There is a full description of the plan and a place where you can look to see what attorenys are signed up in Massachusetts now. We are in the process of reaching out to a few other prominent police labor attorenys to get them to join onto the plan.
You can join individually or as a group, like Boston Detectives did. If you join as a group you get a discount & the plan costs only $197 for full coverage. There are also options to puchase only Civil & Criminal coverage for short money. Many P.O.'s have joined the Tri-Town FOP Lodge, which is made up of over 300 members from many different police agencies (federal, state, municipal, etc.) Check out the Tri-Town Lodge FOP at www.massfop30.com
Along with the benefits of the FOP legal plan once you become an FOP member you also have the benefits of the insurance and scholarships etc. Both the Tri-Town Lodge web site & the national FOP web site should answer any questions you may have.
You can always contact the FOP State Lodge at (50 222-3182 if you have any questions.
