Emt exam computer portion easy?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

I have done the practical portion of EMT basic test and I'm waiting for a date for the computer part. Do I need to really study or is it common sense stuff that if you did fine in the class you'll be ok.
My understanding is it is 100 questions and it stops you after you answer 70 correct is this right?
My other question is starting pay for a new emt is it like $12/hr?

Posted by: rocksy1826

it's not that hard.

starting depends where you work. it can be anywhere from 9.50/hr - 14/hr

it doesn't stop you after 70. you do the entire 100 and then find out your score. you have to get at least a 70

the kaplan test prep book isn't supposed to be good for studying. you should study a little to make sure depending on how long it's been since the end of your emt class . practice tests

as a rookie emt? learn the word "dialysis" and get used to non emergent t/p's.

I just took the test today(2/15). I finished up my EMT class with a 90gpa and found the test to be not terribly difficult but it I did not find it overly easy. I reviewed quickly for it. I passed but with a lower score then I had hoped for, I was fairly disappointed. Just a heads up all my questions involving CPR had the wrong ratios, they still have the old 15:2 ratio on the computer. I pointed it out to the proctor. Good luck.

I know that when I took my test there were some stupid questions...such as

Haw much gas an an ambulance handle
A. 10 gal.
B. 20 gal.
C. 30 gal.
D. 00 gal.

Can Anyone answer this question?

Posted by: 209

I had my EMT-B certification from NY and then brought it over to MA...It had been 3 years since I took the class and had not been on an Ambulance in 2 years....That said I reviewed the book and managed to pass test. If you just took the course recently you should have no problem...There are some questions in there which are difficult if the infos not fresh. Good luck!

D. 00- an ambulance (should) run on diesel, which is a fuel, not gas.

There are still a few gasoline ambulances out there. We got rid of one about five years ago. Should of kept it ran better than what we have now.

Posted by: CivilServiceNO1Fan

Thats the only answer that seems probable since every rig I have ever driven is a 55 gal tank.

i've seen one. i hear they run like pure shit

Back in 'the day' all we had were gas buses!

Posted by: CivilServiceNO1Fan

I even heard rumor that Ford is ceasing production of E-Series cutaways due to a problem with the current 6 L Powerstroke. Should make it interesting

Posted by: sweeper20

Interesting...The GMC's BEMS have are a sweet ride from what I hear...

Posted by: CivilServiceNO1Fan

The GMCs will out perform the Ford E series in every category I have seen. Better engine, braking, ride, handling, and weight distribution than the E.

It may be apples to oranges as we are comparing a van to a truck, but the F series has never been a nimble machine- the Chevy/GMC has a much better turning radius.

Yes! and we took vitals by hand not machine!

Posted by: rocksy1826

hey! i take my vitals the old fashioned way! the only time i use machines is when in triage and the nurse insists

Yeah believe it or not that question was on my state boards...The only good thing about it was that it made me laugh and relaxed me a little.

Yes and the answer is 00 and I made up the rest of the numbers because they are irrelevant to the question

I had a 98 average in the class and still got a 76 or something. I read the entire book twice before my test. The written test is completely friggin irrelevant and does not test knowledge. I don't give a damn (nor does anyone on the planet but OEMS) what the friggin name of the "lift" I used to pick up the pt. As far as a low score, who cares, get the ticket.

agree...

I got a whopping 72 on the test and I studied a little bit. Go over the material from the book. My instructor passed out "sample tests" and the questions were almost identical to the ones on the test. They of course were not in the same order and they were spread out over several different sample tests. Besides the computer randomizes each test. I had 8 OB/GYN questions on mine, so make sure you know that.

Posted by: SP1173

I had my test today and like some other people that posted, I test well and I got a 76. If you are a poor test taker I think you are F*&$ed.
I passed but I expected to be at least in the high 80's.

there was a question about meds on the rig like lanzopan and diazopan I had no clue?

It had the old cpr standards like someone else said
some scenarios I had no idea what they were talking about, never taught in class or in the book from what I read.

Anyway now I guess I have to learn to take someone's blood pressure

Posted by: Upandcoming

Congrats it seems like you did just as good as the rest of us...and we are all good EMT's.

Now learn to kiss ass with dispatchers and RN's and you will go far in this field.

I took and passed the EMT-B exam today with an 81
