A man with Massachusetts and New Hampshire ties has been arrested and is accused of working with the terrorist group Al Qaeda.
Daniel Joseph Maldonado, 28, was taken from a federal court in Houston, Texas on Tuesday under heavy guard.
Court documents said that Maldonado trained with Al Qaeda sympathizers in Somalia.
He "admitted participating in military training in Mogadishu" which included "weapons, explosives, and physical training," the papers said.
Affidavits indicate Maldonado was born in Boston and moved to Texas. A check of additional documents reveals that he once lived in Methuen, Mass. and also lived in a home on Gregg Circle in Londonderry, New Hampshire.
People at the home on Tuesday night declined comment and would not confirm that they were relatives of Maldonado. They did say that this was all a private family matter.
In the court documents, the FBI said that Maldonado went overseas to study Islam, but took up with an extremist paramilitary group dedicated to an Islamic state in Somalia.
The paperwork said that, "He consorted with an individual who assembled, produced and tested IEDs. He (Maldonado) watched and learned as this individual manufactured small explosive devices."
The FBI alleged that Al Qaeda members were present at the camp and that Maldonado told them he would be willing to become a suicide bomber.
Maldonado was captured by Kenyan forces as he tried to avoid capture by the Somalians last month. It was then that he was turned over to the FBI and later interrogated.
Court papers said that although his activities were targeted toward the Somali government, Maldonado said that he had "no problem killing or fighting Americans because he was angry with America" and that "he had no problem with the September 11, 2001 attacks."
Maldonado is currently being held on bond in Texas.
