They'll give a test... collect your money, and 3 months later post an Ad and hire from a list of resumes instead....

In case you missed the 11/17/05 edition of the Daily Hampshire Gazette (and most certainly you did), you would have read that UMass has pledged to add 10 full time police officer positions between FY06 and about FY09/10. That is why there are so many entrance examination tests being advertised.

What does that translate to? New officers just completing field training. Recruits in the academy, and additional recruits slated to go the next academy, and more positions to be hired off of the next exam and of course backfills resulting in promotions, retirements, etc. Bottom line, UMPD is an expanding department.

RPD931 is not quite correct. There are TWO testing avenues; a civil service-type entrance examination process (used to recruit civilians) and/or a lateral transfer process (used to recruit police officers). Due to an agreement with the labor union, UMPD can use either to recruit and rapidly fill vacancies. The chief of police may then choose to hire recruits or trained officers dependant upon the needs of the department at the time.

What is more, and maybe unique to Massachusetts, is an agreement that a laterally-hired officer may be credited for his/her years of previous service and be hired into UMPD at a higher pay step based on previous full time law enforcement service (a hiring practice that is used in other states).

So, if you are a mid-step patrolman at RPD, and you are hired laterally into UMPD, your salary is not the UMPD starting salary, it will be several steps higher on the UMPD salary scale based upon the years of your full time service. The top step is approx. $48,000 with ample amounts of overtime.

This post is the correct vacancy annoucement, posted after the announcement was amended.

RPD931 You hit it right, put out 5 ads in months and hire nobody and then do it again a year later.
