On Saturday, November 13, 2004, Auxiliary Constable Glen Evely was killed when a suspect in a stolen vehicle collided with the patrol car he was riding in while on duty as a Sworn Auxiliary Member of the RCMP.
All Auxiliary Members of the RCMP take an oath when sworn in and are provided full Peace Officer status while in uniform and on-duty. They are respected members of the RCMP and give thousands of hours of their time annually to their communities.
Mr. Bob Lyon, coordinator of the Canadian Police and Peace Officer's Memorial has stated that while A/Cst. Evely's death was a tragedy, he doesn't qualify for the monument because he was an Auxiliary Constable, not a regular member of the force.
Mr. Lyon further stated that "Glen Evely was presented twice to the board. And both times they turned it down because he was not a sworn peace officer doing his job. Simple as that."
It is obvious from the above statement that the board of the Memorial is mis-informed with respect to our Auxiliary Constables being sworn Peace Officers and it is time to set the record straight.
By signing this petition, we ask that Mr. Lyon and the board of the Canadian Police and Peace Officer's Memorial accept Auxiliary Constable Glen Evely's name for addition to the honour roll.
Very simply, all Auxiliary and Reserve Constables are SWORN PEACE OFFICERS, while IN UNIFORM, and ON DUTY. A/Cst. Glen Evely met these conditions when his life was so tragically ended. Give A/Cst. Glen Evely the honour he deserves and change the policy to accept Canadian Auxiliary and Reserve Members to the Canadian Police and Peace Officer's Memorial.
UPDATE (February 2007): The Canadian Police and Peace Officer's Memorial has recently changed their criteria, as outlined in the "Criteria" section on the above website, to SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDE all Auxiliary and other Volunteers from the Memorial, leaving no doubt they do not consider the work done by volunteer PEACE OFFICERS to be worthy of the Memorial. The site now states that to be considered for the Memorial, the person must have been a full time, paid employee.
If you agree that this criteria must be changed to include the hundreds of PEACE OFFICER volunteers in our country, please sign the petition and pass the link along to all the contacts in your email address book, both at home and at work. We need your support!

Incident Location: Vernon, British Columbia
Weapon Used: Automobile

Auxiliary Constable Evely was killed when his patrol car was struck by a stolen pickup truck following a police pursuit in Vernon, British Columbia.

Other officers had initiated the pursuit at approximately 0215 hours after receiving reports of a drunk driver. When they located the vehicle they determined that it had been stolen the night before. When the officers attempted to stop the truck the driver sped away.
The pursuing officers broke off the chase shortly after it began as a result of the suspect's reckless driving. Even though the chase had been terminated the driver continued to flee.
At the intersection of 29th Street and 30th Avenue, in Vernon, the driver ran a red light and struck the patrol car Auxiliary Constable Evely was riding in. Auxiliary Constable Evely was pronounced dead at the scene. His partner was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. Both suspects in the stolen vehicle were also taken into custody.
Auxiliary Constable Evely and his partner were aware of the earlier pursuit but had not been involved with it and were not attempting to locate the vehicle at the time the incident occurred. Auxiliary Constable Evely had served with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for 2 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
