What's wrong with Worcester? Anti-Glock?

I caught this quote today in Forbes from an AP article, "Gun Maker Targets Cops, Military to Grow"

"A police officer on the street isn't going to say he prefers a Colt or a Beretta or a Glock over a Smith & Wesson," said Ray McGrath, the political director of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers. He retired from the Worcester, Mass. police department in 2002 carrying a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum just as his fellow officers were switching to 9 mm Glocks.

"The reality is that the general police public is more concerned about the safety and accuracy of weapon," he said. "They're not particular to the actual manufacturer of a weapon."

Is that how my neighbors over in Worcester feel? Glocks are far better made than the junk Smith & Wesson is turning out the past few years. Worcester's sometimes a little behind times.

ARTICLE INTRO

Smith & Wesson may be best recognized as the brand of choice for Dirty Harry, the movie cop who warned punks his .44 Magnum was "the most powerful handgun in the world."

But that was in 1971, and much has changed in the past 36 years. Police officers want lighter-weight pistols than the bulky steel revolver "Dirty" Harry Callahan barely concealed under a sport coat. Soldiers need foolproof weapons that won't get jammed by the desert sands.

There are guns now more powerful than the .44, and Smith & Wesson has realized it can't get by on its name - or Dirty Harry's - alone.

That's why Mike Golden, Smith & Wesson's CEO for the past two years, has targeted new technologies and sales to the military and police departments to ensure the company's future.

Hey Goodwin,
Can't this guy be entitled to his opinion? He retired wearing a .357 S&W which he was probably issued in the early 70's. He was trained on and feels comfortable with it so why change a good thing?

Glocks are better than the junk Slick And Weasel are putting out & I agree. But thier older revolvers will still be shooting long after me and you both are dead and turned to dust.

I currently carry a Glock .40. I am not a big gun guy and can hazard a guess at the model number (21 or 23?) but I really am not into it that much. All I know is I can knock the balls off a bee at 15 yards which is good enough for me. I could do the same thing with the Ruger Speed 6 I was issued when I first came on too. My Glock 19 9MM was a piece of shit and was always all over the paper and the ejector rod was broken on it for God knows how long. So, in effect, all I was carrying was a 9MM derringer with 14 spare rounds.

If I could, I'd switch back to my wheel gun in a second. When you have 6 rounds in the cylinder and 12 more on your belt, you better make damn good & sure you've hit your target. It's a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing you've got 15 ready to go and another 30+ on your belt but accuracy is what you strive for in this business. It's not who can throw the most amount of lead downrange, it's who can hit the target accurately in the center mass. Just my .02 cents. HC
