3rd ANNUAL Drew Drifmeyer Memorial Road Race
SEPTEMBER 5th, 2004, 9:30AM
HYANNIS VILLAGE TOWN GREEN

Drews Story: http://www.ddmrr.com/

In November of 2000 two-year-old Drew Drifmeyer, son of Barnstable Police Officer Eric Drifmeyer, was diagnosed with Metastatic Ependymoma, a rare form of brain tumor. During the following eight months, Drew underwent numerous surgeries, chemotherapy, and two different types of experimental protocols in a desperate attempt to stop the tumors growth. Despite rigorous efforts to find a cure, Drew's tumor continued to grow and on July 14, 2001 Drew lost his battle with cancer and passed away at Children’s Hospital in Boston.

Ependymoma is a rare childhood brain tumor, which attacks the central nervous system and only accounts for approximately eight percent of all pediatric brain tumors. Although Drew’s condition was terminal, the care he received at Dana Farber Cancer institute was insurmountable. Drew became all too familiar with the wonderful nurses and doctors at the Jimmy Fund Clinic where he received his chemotherapy treatments and experimental drugs. One only needs to visit the Jimmy Fund Clinic to realize the magnitude of childhood cancer and the very special and individual children that are affected.

Drew was a very happy, energetic, rough and tumble little boy. His brief presence deeply touched countless individuals and he is truly loved and missed by his family and friends every single day. With the help of research, some very caring people, and a little bit of hope, some day these dreadful childhood diseases will be a thing of the past.

The Drew Drifmeyer Memorial Road Race is a 5K race in downtown Hyannis, which also includes a 1 mile walk and a Kids Fun Run. All monies raised are donated to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund in memory of Drew Drifmeyer. This event has raised $40,000.00 since its inception and was placed in the top 10% of first year fund raisers for Dana Farber.
