I was looking for any departments that currently have an Officer the Month program in place. What is the selection criteria? What does the department do for the recieipient? etc. Who makes the selection? Any help would be appreciated.

my pd has a program where anyone (patrol, det, or supervisor) can make a nomination. it is then reviewed by a board (civilian/police) and deciced if it is worthy. I don't think this happens on a monthly basis but it is awarded it is to only one person per month. the person is also given 8 hours comp time.
My department has an officer of the quarter. They are selected by command staff (I don't know if there is a specific criteria they follow).
The officer's picture and name is on a plaque in the lobby. The newspaper usually writes an article and the officer gets a designated parking spot (which everyone steals anyway).

Officer Jason Sutherland seems to be a rising star there in Natick... at least, thats according to the Officer of the Month Program! The citations make for interesting reading!

My first department instituted an "Officer of the Month" program. It was a "carrot and stick" deal decided by the bosses. I was the first recipient, having survived a "witch hunt", taking the hit and subsequently telling them what "they wanted to hear" (contrition). I left a couple of months later...but I did receive 1/4" and 3/8" drive socket sets as a "reward"!
It doesn't matter what department you work for. Certain people will receive plaudits, and certain others will not, even though each person took the same risks and completed the same tasks. It's the way of the world...either you're "in with the 'in' crowd" or not. I'm not, and if I were to perform some selfless act worthy of some decoration or award, I would refuse it. I would have done my job and that is reward enough for me. I will not participate in the "aggrandizement" of the department or the political running dogs who pretend to lead it.
Sorry...is my attitude showing?

We had one, but it turned into a popularity contest.
