Do they send you through the municple academy if hired? or sspo?

Posted by: Kilvinsky

Not municipal. Really, very few if any of the smaller college send people through the municipal, especially since it's not even much of an option any more.

So, though I'm not sure what the training situation is, I'm fairly sure it's NOT the municipal academy.

Good department though. Some really top notch guys there.

Seeing how it says "Able to obtain appointment as a MA State Special Police Officer in accordance with M.G.L. c.22C,s.63." id say its SSpo academy.

Well, all of the bigger schools like Boston University, Boston College, MIT and Harvard, also get their police powers from Chapter 22C Section 63 but these schools require their officers to attend the full-time municipal police academy. So basically don't go by the announcement. Although I believe they usually hire guys that are already trained or can get their police powers.

The fact that they are seeking someone who has already completed an academy and has the qualifications to be sworn in, is a pretty good indicator that they have no intention of hiring someone and sending them to any academy. It never hurts to apply though, they are a pretty good bunch and the area is very active. They accept SSPO, MPTC, and I believe they will even consider someone with a reserve academy if they meet the SSPO qualifications.

The days of a department sending you to a full time academy are slowly dwindling. Many departments are going the way of hiring/sponsoring you but the costs are all yours.

Too many guys are jumping ship which is something that was almost unheard of years ago.

Do they still carry revolvers at Wentworth?.

Posted by: masscopguy

I am almost positive they carry 9mm. A Wentworth guy was infront of me in a line at Boston Police HQ, he looked pretty sharp. I believe he was carryig a 9mm.

I use to work there back in 02. Good dept. They were just changing over to the 9mm. I believe sigs. They don't send anyone to an academy. They want the min. of the reserve academy. that is how i got my powers.

I know one of the guys over there, I'm pretty sure they carry 40's.

Posted by: soxrock75

It seems like they are hiring every 5-6 months over there. Is it because there are new positions or guys moving on to bigger PD's? Or is there another problem? Most of the posts that I have read about the WPD have been pretty positive so, I am not sure. Anyone have any info on the turnover/hiring frequency?

Posted by: copper24

How can they move on to a town pd with only a SSPO academy. Thats what the college sends them through correct?

Posted by: WITDispatch

To All:
I work at Wentworth as a dispatcher with 6 months experience. They do not send candidates through any academy. The department is looking for someone with SSPO or reserve academy experience prior to hire. They also prefer EMT certification before hire also, which may seem odd but we don't have a 24 hour health center like some of the larger campuses do and our officers are the first on scene for medical calls outside of normal business hours, and they do hopspital transport for "non-emergency" calls (interpret that as you see fit).
