WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Reports about a study that found microwave ovens can be used to sterilize kitchen sponges sent people hurrying to test the idea this week -- with sometimes disastrous results.

A team at the University of Florida found that two minutes in the microwave at full power could kill a range of bacteria, viruses and parasites on kitchen sponges.

Oh sure, now you tell me!

I nuked two of my sponges this morning, but I didn't blow anything up. They were of course wet (but not soaking wet) beforehand, and I did two of them for a minute.

That's what I get for reading my mother's Bottom Line Personal, I suppose.

Oh yeah... I used to love freaking a buddy of mine out with that... "It's going to explode...." Getting rid of that fien metalic dust was always a bitch though.
