There are many instances where a police officer or animal control officer may have to defend against a canine attack. In the old days the options were, shoot it or beat it with a nightstick. Thankfully to days law enforcement officers have more humane and effective options.

Taser MX
This taser is designed ONLY for animal use, it hits hard with 50,000 volts at 26 amps. In real world deployments this taser will bring down some of the largest dogs in a matter of seconds. And keep them down. Typically the human Taser (m26/x26) will stun the animal and scare it.

DanInject. PneuDart, Daystate (Remote drug delivery systems)
Essentially these are large bore airguns that shoot a dart to deliver incapacitating drugs.
Depending on the urgency of the situation, this may not be entirely effective for all law enforcement situations. As well the cost and complexity of some of these systems preclude use by small departments.

Suppressed Rimfire Pistols and Rifles
These are a reasonable option for warrant squads and animal control officers that are in situations where they must put down an animal quietly and for keeps. Using some of todays more advanced and specialized rimfire rounds (aquila Sniper Subsonic 60 grain) and a barrel with a twist rate to match this long and heavy projectile a very effective suppressed rifle can be built. In many instances a suppressed rimfire will meet or exceed the terminal performance of a subsonic 5.56 NATO round.
Again not for everyone but it's an effective guard dog removal tool and works well with small animal conservation.
A companion to the suppressed rimfire rifle is obviously the suppressed rimfire pistol, same ammo, slightly less terminal performance but still very accurate and quiet. In many instances the true benefit of some of these guns include a somewhat "normal appearance as the suppressor are built right to the gun and just look like heavy barrel target guns.

Suppressed Centerfire Rifles
There are many variations on these rifles from semi auto Marlin camp carbines in 9mm and .45 caliber to Ruger 77/44 bolt action rifles. In any either instance these are HARD hitting quiet guns that will easily dispatch deer sized game from a distance.

Im comfortable with the baton and spray thanks. I dont know what department in Mass would invest in those kind of tools for even the larger animal control units. EPO's are good with the tranquilizers and other alternative-to-lethal methods though.

it's hard to say...most of the time it's the Animal Control guys that have these items.
Out here in the hill towns...it seems every department has a dartgun of some sort.
Bear are the most common problem out this way followed by coydogs. Certainly these are not everyday items...but they are effective and customers from a lot of other states seem to deploy the suppressed rifles a bit.
