AYER -- Selectmen have locked up Police Chief Richard J. Rizzo with another three-year contract.

Rizzo's last contract expired June 30. The two sides reached agreement during an executive session Dec. 12, and announced the deal on Friday.

Selectmen Connie Sullivan, Carolyn McCreary and Gary Luca endorsed the new agreement. Selectmen Frank Maxant and Pauline Conley voted against the contract.

"I enjoy working for the town and I think the Police Department is an excellent police department," Rizzo said from his office. "I think it's come a long way since I started here and hopefully we can continue in the future to serve the community."

Rizzo took over the Ayer department in September 1997 after a 25-year career with the Portland, Maine, Police Department.

Rizzo's new pact is retroactive to July 1 and runs through June 30, 2009.

It boosts the chief's educational incentive stipend from 10 to 14 percent of his $90,619 base salary. There were no other changes.

"I'm pleased that the Board of Selectmen
and Chief Rizzo were able to complete contract negotiations in an amicable, professional and fair manner," said Town Administrator Shaun Suhoski in a released statement. "Chief Rizzo is a valued and experienced department head, and I believe this contract reflects his worth to the community while also recognizing the fiscal constraints facing the town."
