Heroic last stand, Marines thwart enemy attack
You can help support our troops
YARMOUTH - This is the latest from Ramadi, Iraq. Nicholas G. Xiarhos of Yarmouth (son of Yarmouth Police Lt. Steven Xiarhos) and 32 other Marines were saved by two brave Marines who stood there ground and gave their lives for their brother Marines, and the Iraqis that they work and live with in Ramadi:
5/20/2008 by Lance Cpl. Casey Jones, Regimental Combat Team 1
RAMADI, IRAQ (April 29, 200
- It was a typical quiet morning on April 22, with the temperature intensifying as a bright orange sun emerged high from the horizon.
Lance Cpl. Jordan Haerter, a rifleman with 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 1, and Cpl. Jonathan T. Yale, a rifleman with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, RCT-1, were standing post, just as they've done numerous times before. During a standard length watch in a small checkpoint protected by concrete barriers where they overlooked the small gravel road, lined with palm trees leading to their entry control point.
However, this morning would be different. Quickly it would turn, chaotic then tragic. Two Marines would gallantly sacrifice their lives so others could live.
A truck packed with thousands of pounds of explosives entered the area where Haerter and Yale were standing guard. Realizing the vehicles intentions Haerter and Yale without hesitation stood their ground, drew their weapons and fired at the vehicle. The truck rolled to a stop and exploded, killing the two Marines.
"I was on post the morning of the attack," said Lance Cpl. Benjamin Tupaj, a rifleman with 3rd Platoon, Police Transition Team 3, Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. "I heard the (squad automatic weapon) go off at a cyclic rate and then the detonation along with a flash. Then I heard a Marine start yelling 'we got hit, we got hit.'
It was hectic."
In the face of a committed enemy, Haerter and Yale stood their ground, in turn saving the lives of numerous Marines, sailors, Iraqi Policemen, and civilians. Both Marines displayed heroic, self-sacrificing actions and truly lived up to the Corps values of honor, courage, and commitment.
"They saved all of our lives, if it wasn't for them that gate probably wouldn't have held," Tupaj said. "The explosion blew out all of the windows over 150 meters from where the blast hit. If that truck had made it into the compound, there would've been a lot more casualties. They saved everyone's life here."
According to official reports the heroic actions of Haerter and Yale's saved the lives of the 33 Marines and 21 Iraqi Police as well as numerous civilians at the entry control point.
"They are heroes because thousands of pounds (of explosives) would've made its way through the gate and many more of us wouldn't be here," said Lance Cpl. Lawrence Tillery a rifleman with 3rd platoon. "I have a son back home, and I know if that truck would've made it to where it was going - I wouldn't be here today. Because of Lance Cpl. Haerter and Cpl. Yale, I will be able to see my son again. They gave me that opportunity."
A week after the attack, the Marines with 3rd platoon, remember their fallen brethren as good friends and Marines
"Cpl. Yale was a great guy, really friendly and kind of shy," said Hospitalman Eric Schwartz a corpsman with the platoon.
"Haerter was an amazing guy, I knew everything about him. He was my best friend." said Lance Cpl. Cody Israel, a rifleman with 3rd platoon, Haerter's roommate for more than a year and half.
Haerter and Yale were both posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and have been nominated for an award for their valor.
There are several other Marines from Yarmouth currently in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
If any of you would like to help them this is a list of their needs and addresses. Everything that they receive is shared with their brothers. Maybe your church group or children's school would also be interested in helping out with the following items: - Multivitamins
- Tuna Fish in Packets
- High Protein Nutrition Shakes
- High Protein Nutrition Bars
- Meal Replacement Shakes and Powders
- On the Go Packets of Crystal Light and Gatorade
- Deflated Soccer Balls (given to Iraqi and Afghan children while on patrol)
"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem. "

DENNIS - Tuesday, Dennis Police arrested 30-year-old Scott C. Pereira of 197 Route 6A in Dennis charging him with the May 11, 2008 kidnapping and assault of a 15-year-old girl who had been taken from her Dennis residence as she slept.
The incident occurred sometime after midnight on May 11th when an unknown male (later identified as Mr. Pereira) entered the residence (located off Route 6A) through an unlocked first floor door.
The victim, who was asleep in a second floor bedroom, was awoken when the suspect covered her mouth with a gloved hand and laid on top of her. The suspect told the victim that she was not to cry out, that he had a knife and that he had tied up her parents, who were asleep in an adjoining bedroom.
The suspect then forcibly removed the victim from the residence and assaulted her at an outdoor location on the property of the residence. He then forcibly moved the victim to a second nearby location, off the residential property, and again assaulted her.
The victim used a ploy to escape from her attacker and returned to her home where she notified her parents of the assault.
The break in the case came following examination and testing of physical evidence recovered by police officers the night of the attack.
Mr. Pereira is also being charged with armed burglary, 2 counts of rape of a child with force, 2 counts of indecent assault on a person over 14 years, breaking and entering a vehicle and larceny of a prescription medication.

Dennis Police Chief Michael Whalen pointed out the importance of team work, among the many agencies involved in the investigation, in bringing this difficult case to a speedy resolution.

Pereira was arrested at his residence at approximately 11:40 a.m. Tuesday morning without incident.

Dennis Fire Department Bids Farewell to DY intern

WEST DENNIS - Gathered in the second-floor firehouse kitchen, firefighters and officers of the Dennis Fire Department said goodbye to 17-year-old Dave Cappellucci Friday morning. The Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School junior and Yarmouth resident just finished up his second-semester DY School-to-Careers internship at the department.
Cappellucci, the son of Steve and Karen Cappellucci, interned at the department for six hours each week since January. With an eye towards public safety as a career, he assisted the firefighters in routine tasks around the department from labeling tools to maintaining equipment to emptying the trash.
It was apparent from the firefighters' send-off that they held Cappellucci in high regard. Chief Mark Dellner (above right with Cappellucci) spoke for the department when he described Dave as "a fine example of what today's young man should be. He is not afraid of hard work and he's got a good attitude. His parents should be very proud."
When asked how the reality of the job matched his preconceptions, Cappellucci responded that he previously thought that firefighters "just sat around waiting for calls." He learned that there is, instead, an endless cycle of tasks, checklists, and training to occupy the time.
As a senior at DY in the fall, Cappellucci plans to follow a "dual enrollment" path at DY and Cape Cod Community College where he will take the Emergency Medical Technician course. He has his sights set on college followed by a stint in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Fire Captain Robert Marseglia was on duty at Dennis Station 2 on Route 6A and missed the going-away party but he spoke highly of both the intern and the School-to-Careers program: "Dave was a very conscientious worker and it is nice to see someone thinking about their future - trying it out. The program at DY deserves a lot of credit for making this opportunity available, for helping kids find out what they want to do."
Guidance Counselor Patricia Fruggiero, School-to-Careers Coordinator at DY, reports that during the second semester the internship program placed over 50 students in local businesses and organizations. The School-to-Career program has been in existence for 12 years and has placed hundreds of students in work settings. In fact, Fruggiero reports that things have come "full circle" with former DY students who were once interns now hosting interns themselves.

YARMOUTH - New details on a story reported first by Cape Wide News. On Sunday at approximately 2:21 p.m. the Yarmouth Police Department received a report from a concerned citizen that a man armed with a sawed off-shotgun was seeking ammunition and threatening to kill a group of people. Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers responded to the Curve Hill Road neighborhood in South Yarmouth and met with the complainant who further reported that the armed man had left the area on foot just prior to the police arrival.

Armed with the name of the suspect and a description, Patrol Officers began a saturation patrol search of the area. After checking the immediate area Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer James Cheverie went to the nearest store that sold ammunition. While approaching the area of the Riverview Bait and Tackle Shop on Route 28 in South Yarmouth, Patrol Officer Cheverie spotted a white Honda pulling out of the store parking lot with a passenger in the right front seat that matched the description of the suspect. The Honda travelled a short distance westbound on Route 28 and came to a sudden stop in a driveway on Carter Road. Patrol Officer Cheverie radioed for back up support and encountered the female operator and the male passenger. Patrol Officer Cheverie identified the passenger as the armed suspect and ordered him to show his hands. The suspect did not cooperate and refused to comply with commands. Within seconds the operator exited the vehicle and the male passenger jumped across into the driver seat and tried to drive away. Patrol Officer Cheverie took hold of the operator and pulled him from the vehicle. The operator resisted, fought back violently and ran off. Patrol Officer Cheverie pursued the suspect on foot on Carter Road to Wood Road and stopped him on Rose Road. Patrol Officer Cheverie brought the suspect to the ground, handcuffed him and placed him under arrest. Patrol Officer Chris Capobianco and K9 Patrol Officer Peter McClelland arrived on scene and assisted in taking the combative suspect, 48-year-old Michael S. Laurie (above) of South Dennis, into custody and to Yarmouth Police Headquarters where he was charged with possession of a sawed off shotgun, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of ammo, possession of a firearm with three prior violent crime convictions, resisting arrest and receiving stolen property.

At the same time Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers Philip Magnuson and Erica Wenberg arrived in the area of Carter Road and found that the female operator and white Honda were gone. A check of the vehicle registration listed the owner living nearby on Penn Star Lane in South Yarmouth. Patrol Officers Magnuson and McGrath arrived at that location and found the female operator and the Honda. The operator was identified as 31-year-old Sadie Crane (right) of South Yarmouth. A box of 16 gauge shotgun ammunition rounds were located inside the vehicle. Crane was subsequently placed under arrest for possession of a sawed-off shotgun, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of ammo, and receiving stolen property and was transported to Yarmouth Police Headquarters.
Patrol Officer Cheverie returned to the Carter Road neighborhood and met with a citizen who advised him that while Patrol Officer Cheverie was chasing the suspect, the female operator removed an object from the vehicle and hid it under a nearby trailer. Patrol Officer Cheverie checked under the trailer and located the loaded sawed off shotgun and several rounds of additional 16 gauge shotgun ammunition.
All evidentiary items have been secured and will be analyzed at the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab. Both suspects have been arraigned in the Barnstable District Court and additional felony charges are expected.

Yarmouth officers honored for recent actions
YARMOUTH - Yarmouth Police are recognizing some of their own for recent actions that led to breaks in in major crime incidents. First On Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 00:12 a.m. Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer Scott Lundegren was conducting an area patrol check of the Captain's Village residential neighborhood in South Yarmouth.
As he patrolled the area Patrol Officer Lundegren observed a blue 1988 Dodge Dynasty at the intersection of Captain Noyes and Captain Crocker Road. Officer Lundgren recognized one of the persons in the vehicle who has a history of motor vehicle break-ins and thefts and was aware of the recent rash of thefts in our community. Upon seeing the police cruiser the vehicle sped off and Patrol Officer Lundegren radioed for assistance. A few moments later-fellow Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer Christopher R. Marino spotted the vehicle operating at a high rate of speed northbound on Forest Road and with the assistance of Patrol Officer Lundegren-conducted a vehicle stop on Winslow Gray Road.
Upon approaching the vehicle the Patrol Officers observed that none of the five occupants were wearing their seatbelts and further detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage and freshly burnt marijuana coming from the interior of the vehicle. As they were speaking with the occupants back up Patrol Officer Christopher Van Ness noticed that one of the occupants had a 6" folding knife on his belt. Van Ness recognized the knife as being stolen from a motor vehicle theft investigation that he had investigated over the weekend.
A check of the vehicle revealed two marijuana pipes and several items such as numerous cell phones-IPods-a large amount of packs of cigarettes-and a pair of gloves.
Yarmouth Police Patrol Sergeant Patrick Carty arrived at the scene and Yarmouth Police Detectives Russell Giammarco and Eric Nuss were called in to assist in the investigation. As a result of the investigation 60 nighttime felonies were solved-5 persons were charged with a total of 350 felonies-and $10,000 worth of property recovered.
Recognition:
For superior performance while serving as a unified patrol shift in which Patrol Officer Scott Lundegren and fellow Patrol Officers and Detectives demonstrated a superior degree of initiative-professionalism-and teamwork that reflects great credit upon law enforcement and the Yarmouth Police Department...
Then on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at approximately 2:21 p.m. the Yarmouth Police Department received a report from a concerned citizen that a man-armed with a sawed off-shotgun-was seeking ammunition and threatening to kill a group of people. Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers responded to the Curve Hill Road neighborhood in South Yarmouth and met with the complainant who further reported that the armed man had left the area on foot just prior to the police arrival.
Armed with the name of the suspect and a description-Patrol Officers began a saturation patrol search of the area. After checking the immediate area Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer James Cheverie went to the nearest store that sold ammunition. While approaching the area of the Riverview Bait and Tackle Shop on Route 28 in South Yarmouth Patrol Officer Cheverie spotted a white Honda pulling out of the store parking lot with a passenger in the right front seat that matched the description of the suspect. The operator resisted-fought back violently-and ran off. Patrol Officer Cheverie pursued the suspect on foot on Carter Road to Wood Road and stopped him on Rose Road. Patrol Officer Cheverie brought the suspect to the ground-handcuffed him-and placed him under arrest. Patrol Officer Chris Capobianco and K9 Patrol Officer Peter McClelland arrived on scene and assisted in taking the combative suspect in to custody and to Yarmouth Police Headquarters.
Patrol Officers Magnuson and Wenberg arrived at that location and located the female operator and the Honda. The operator was identified and a box of 16 gauge shotgun ammunition rounds located inside the vehicle. The operator was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to Yarmouth Police Headquarters.
Recognition:
For superior performance while serving as a unified patrol shift in which Patrol Officer James Cheverie and each shift member demonstrated a superior degree of initiative-professionalism-and teamwork that reflects great credit upon law enforcement and the Yarmouth Police Department.
