CWN weather alert: (updated on Friday at 2:21 p.m.) High Wind Warning in effect from 6 a.m. Saturday through midnight. A Flood Watch is in effect from Saturday morning through Saturday afternoon. It now appears that Noel, although likely becoming extratropical, will have a more significant inpact on our weekend weather as a major nor'easter. Damaging winds gusting to hurricane force will bring down tree limbs bringing the potential for significant power outages. Heavy rain may cause flooding especially in areas where leaves have clogged storm drains.
From the Cape Cod & Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross:
The organization is urging Cape Codders to exercise caution during this weekend's predicted weather. You should make sure you have fresh batteries for flashlights and a portable radio. Residents are encouraged to use flashlights rather than candles and to avoid any downed utility wires as they may be electrified.
Check on elderly neighbors and family and make sure all outdoor items such as lawn furniture are properly secured. Residents should be able to ride out the storm in their homes, but if the Red Cross is called upon to open area shelters, you should monitor local radio stations to find out where the open shelters are located. If you have to go to a shelter do bring: food, a sleeping bag or inflatable mattress, enough prescription medication and any other necessary supplies to last at least a few days. Do not bring pets, weapons or valuables.

The driver of the Escort wagon (left) was killed in a head-on collision with a Subaru wagon (far right).

TRURO - One person was killed, two others injured in another horrific crash along Route 6 on the outer Cape.
The crash happened about 4:30 p.m. Friday on Route 6 between the Truro Transfer Station and Jack's Firewood stand.
Eyewitnesses say it appears a Subaru Legacy Outback wagon crossed over the center line and collided head-on with a Ford Escort wagon.
A Toyota Rav4 could not avoid the collision and also crashed.
The driver of the Escort, 55-year-old Edith Sweet of Truro, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Outback, 63-year-old David Gilman of Truro, had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life and was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The Rav4 driver 64-year-old Katherine Stillman of Wellfleet was not injured. A juvenile passenger in the escort was also taken to CCH. Car parts and broken glass littered the highway which was closed while reconstruction was done by the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council's Accident Reconstruction Unit.
The crash comes 10 days after another deadly wreck on Route 6 just a few miles up in Wellfleet.
The highway through the two towns is one lane both ways similar to the way the stretch between exits 9 and 12 (at one time between exits 7 and 12) used to be. That stretch was the scene of frequent head-on crashes for many years until a divider and other improvements were made. (Story and photos by Tim Caldwell).

Falmouth single-vehicle accident
Single-car accident in Falmouth Wednesday morning.
FALMOUTH - A single-vehicle motor vehicle accident occured at 9:10 a.m. on Blacksmithshop Road in Falmouth Wednesday near the town disposal site.
A BMW coupe slid off the road just beyond a curve, coming to rest on a small boulder and hitting several trees.
Although there was considerable damage to the front of the BMW, the 20- to 30-year-old male driver, the lone occupant in the vehicle, appeared to receive only minor injuries and was transported priority 3 to Falmouth Hospital by Falmouth Fire/Rescue.
The accident is under investigation by the Falmouth Police Department. The roads in the area were very slick at the time, especially in a shaded area that had not had time to dry after earlier misty rain. The wet road appeared to contribute to the accident.
Drivers should be reminded at this time of the year that roads can become slick overnight and remain dangerous later into the day.

"Two police officers from Cape get awards
var isoPubDate = 'October 30, 2007'October 30, 2007
Gov. Deval Patrick yesterday honored two Cape Cod police officers with George L. Hanna memorial awards for bravery.
Orleans officer Anthony Manfredi III was presented a medal of honor for his actions following a shooting at the Eastham Police Station on Oct. 17, 2006.
David Hill, 23, had fired on the Eastham police station. Manfredi responded on mutual aid to a perimeter that was set up around Hill's home. He shot Hill, who was armed, after Hill pulled a handgun from his waistband. A report by the district attorney found Manfredi acted in self-defense.
Patrick also presented Harwich officer Robert Hadfield with a meritorious conduct award for a pond rescue on Christmas Day. Hadfield pulled a 25-year-old man, who had fallen out of his canoe, to safety after falling into the water himself during the rescue."

Head-on car vs dump truck on Route 6 in Truro

A car collided head-on with a dump truck on Route 6 in Truro.

TRURO - Truro Police were literally just finishing up a reconstruction project from the fatal crash on November 9th when they had to rush to the scene of yet another horrific crash. Sometime after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, a Toyota Camry apparently crossed the center line on Route 6 just south of Shore Road (Route 6A) and collided head-on with a 10-wheel dump truck. Rescuers called for a Medflight but it was grounded by bad weather so the car driver 64-year old Charles W. Judge of Wellfleet, who had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life, was rushed by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital and later flown to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. The truck driver 77-year old George Morris of North Truro was not injured.
Firefighters had to use sand to control a diesel spill from the John F. Noons dump truck. Route 6 between Shore Road and South Highland Road was closed and traffic detoured for about four hours while the already-in-town Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Accident Reconstruction unit and a Mass State Police Truck Team investigated the crash. Another crash in backed up traffic south of the scene slightly injured two people. Witnesses at the scene theorized the car driver may have suffered a medical condition before the crash.

Holiday tree vandalized in Provincetown

PROVINCETOWN - For many years now the start of the holiday season in Provincetown has been marked by the lighting of the Pilgrim Monument. For the past four years another tradition has been taking hold. Local artist Julian Popko has sculptured a Christmas Tree out of unused lobster traps in the middle of Lopes Square. This year someone has been removing light bulbs from the display and, as anyone who has worked with such lights knows, if you remove one bulb the whole string goes out. When CWN took this photo Thanksgiving evening all the lights were dark. Reports say that Popko is in Springfield and can't get back to make repairs until next week. A sign attached to the "tree" announces a "Grinch" has been stealing bulbs and ask anyone with information to contact Popko at (413) 543-1956. Police were taking no chances remembering an incident at the same complex about 10 years ago when an estranged husband forced his way into an apartment and shot and killed his ex-wife while the small children were in another room before turning the gun on himself.

Driver "walks away" from Provincetown rollover

The driver of this Nissan SUV was gone when officials arrived on scene early Sunday.

PROVINCETOWN - Somehow the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder walked away from a rollover crash on Provincelands Road sometime before sunrise Sunday. It appeared the vehicle lost control on a slight curve just west of the area referred to be locals as the "quarter mile." Several sections of split rail fence were destroyed and a section of concrete dug up before the vehicle appeared to have cartwheeled down a slight embankment. The road is in the Cape Cod National Seashore and National Park Service Rangers headed by Ranger Mike Minnerath (right) are investigating the crash.

Man acquitted in 2006 P'town death

PROVINCETOWN - A judge Thursday acquitted a New York man of all charges stemming from a deadly incident in Provincetown in 2006. On September 1 of that year Gustavo Ramirez (seen here while in police custody) was driving on Route 6 near the Truro town line when his girlfriend 35-year-old Katherine Wagoner of Troy, NY somehow fell or jumped from his car. She died in a hospital four days later. Ramirez left the scene but was captured a short time later by Truro Police. Judge Richard Connon in Barnstable Superior Court Thursday acquitted Ramirez who had waived a jury trial. Prosecutors had said all along they didn't believe Ramirez had forced Wagoner out of the car but they alleged Ramirez would not let her out of the car and then failed to stop at the scene.
