This Park Ranger, Protection, position is assigned to the Division of Visitor Protection & Resource Management at Lowell National Historical Park.
Major Duties:You will serve as a National Park Service Law Enforcement Commissioned Park Ranger responsible for performing law enforcement duties, including protection of life and property, detection, investigation, apprehension, detention, and prosecution under provisions of applicable laws, rules and regulations enacted to insure protection and safe use of National Park resources. You will educate, interpret and inform visitors about the significance of park resources, resource conservation and sound park use practices.
Qualifications:GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-4 level is required OR four (4) year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree with 24 semester hours of related course work.
GS-7: One (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-5 level is required OR one (1) full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation or superior academic achievement.
GS-9: One (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-7 level is required OR two (2) full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education OR a master’s or equivalent degree related to the occupation or superior academic achievement.
Specialized experience is defined as experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position.
To qualify based on education, submit copy of transcript or list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Application materials will not be returned. You can receive credit for education received outside the United States if you provide evidence that it is comparable to an accredited educational institution in the United States when you apply.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience is also qualifying.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience regardless of whether compensation was received or whether the experience was gained in a part-time or full-time occupation. Full-time work is generally considered to be 35 to 40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Applicants must not have reached their 37th birthday by the appointment date to this position. This position is covered by the special retirement provisions for Federal Law Enforcement Officers and has a mandatory retirement age of 57. If over age 37, selectee to this position must have been or currently be covered by the special retirement provisions and be able to complete at least 20 years of covered service by age 57. You must submit proof of your status in the Law Enforcement retirement system.
You will operate a government motor vehicle. You must have a current valid state driver's license. Please provide the state where your license was issued, license number, and expiration date.
Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Negative drug test results must be received prior to appointment. As a condition of continued employment in this position, incumbent will be required to random testing for illegal drug use.
Selectee not currently occupying a permanent special retirement covered (6c) position in the National Park Service (NPS) must take and pass the NPS Medical Examination prior to appointment to this position.
This position has a critical-sensitive security designation. Selectee must undergo and successfully complete a background investigation as a condition of placement/retention in the position.
The minimum age requirement for public safety positions requires applicant to be at least 21 years of age.
Selectee must be free of any domestic violence convictions.
The selectee must meet requirements for a Level II Law Enforcement Commission to be issued upon appointment.
The selectee must be able to secure and maintain a Level I Authority NPS Law Enforcement Commission.
You will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain firearm proficiency.
How You Will Be Evaluated:You will be evaluated to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications required; and on the extent to which your application shows that you possess the knowledges, skills, and abilities associated with this position as defined below. When describing your knowledges, skills, and abilities, please be sure to give examples and explain how often you used these skills, the complexity of the knowledge you possessed, the level of the people you interacted with, the sensitivity of the issues you handled, etc.
1. Ability to perform law enforcement activities, including patrol and investigation. (Give examples of how you have applied Law Enforcement techniques, methods, and procedures.
2. Ability to perform resource protection duties.
3. Ability to effectively communicate orally.
4. Ability to effectively communicate in writing.

You must meet all qualification requirements and time-in-grade restrictions by the closing date of this announcement.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

How come they never open this position up for regular civilians or other federal employees? I live in Lowell, and would love to transfer to the Park Rangers.

dsm290: They are always posted "agency only", meaning all Dept. of Interior employees, first to facilitate some kind of career ladder. If they don't fill that way then they can go gov-wide or public. The current vacancy has been extended to Feb. 9th. Keep your eyes open on this one for a re-advertisement.
