Man's Corpse Burned, Woman Repeatedly Raped

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A fourth person was arrested Friday in connection with the killing of a young man, whose burned corpse was found dumped along railroad tracks, and the death of his date, who was kept alive for days and raped, authorities said.

All four suspects were being held on federal charges, Knoxville police spokesman Darrell DeBusk said. Two were arrested in Knoxville and the other two in Lebanon, Ky.

The victims, Christopher Newsom, 23, and Channon Christian, a 21-year-old University of Tennessee student, were last seen Saturday night while on a date.

The two had been at a friend's apartment and had left to get something to eat, with the plan of then going to another friend's home to watch movies. They never arrived.

Newsom's body was found the next day. He had been shot and his body set on fire along a rail line, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Rich Knighten said. His girlfriend's vehicle was found nearby.

"The second victim, they kept her for a couple of days and brutally raped and sexually assaulted her," Knighten told The Associated Press in an interview from Louisville. "Then they killed her and dumped her body."

The suspects were arrested Thursday and Friday.

Eric DeWayne Boyd, 34, arrested in Knoxville Thursday night, was charged with being an accessory after the fact in a carjacking, DeBusk said.

Lemaricus Davidson, 25, arrested at an empty house in Knoxville the same day, was charged with federal counts of carjacking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm in a crime of violence, DeBusk said. Davidson had been released in August from a Tennessee prison after serving five years for carjacking and aggravated robbery.

The other two suspects -- George Geovonni Thomas, 27, and Davidson's brother, Letalvis Cobbins, 24 -- were arrested during in a raid on a house in Lebanon, Ky., about 180 miles north of Knoxville.

Thomas was charged with being an accessory after the fact in a carjacking and Cobbins was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition, DeBusk said. Court papers said Cobbins' fingerprints were found on a firearm magazine containing two rounds of 9mm ammunition. He had been convicted in 2003 in New York state of third-degree attempted robbery.

Thomas and Cobbins were to appear before a federal magistrate in Louisville late Friday.

Authorities declined to release further information, citing the ongoing investigation.

The victims' families asked for privacy.

"The Newsom family has suffered a tremendous and tragic loss because of the apparent murder of their beloved son, Chris," Newsom family attorney James A.H. Bell said.

The Christian family thanking the community "for all their prayers and everything that has been done during this time."

"We have lost someone who was very beautiful and loving," the family said in a statement. "We are grateful for the outpouring of help that this community has given us and would not be able to get through this without you."

Was this ever posted here ?

Nope, it's too un-PC to post the truth I guess. I had read about this case and seen various web postings about it on the NYPD Rant, GlockTalk etc, but have not seen it here on Masscops. Nobody wants to be branded or have their posts downloaded for future disciplinary action or just plain blackmail I guess.

Don't believe that this is happening? I've already been threatened with it by a member here along with legal action for voicing my opinion on certain subjects. Guess some cops are a little sensative to criticism I guess. This is why I only post "neutral" type threads since I am a kinder & gentler HousingCop these days. HC

What are you talking about ??????? I asked because I was curious why we never heard about the case, not because I was waving the race card !!!!! Take a chill pill Francis !

Screw that....the best defense is a good offense.

I've practically begged many "important" people to sue me, because I'd love to get them on the stand, under oath. It will never happen, because they have a hell of a lot more to hide than I do.

It's pathetic that two young lives were taken away and that all anyone wants to talk about is race.

Sniper,
Not a swipe at you. I had heard about it and read about it in other forums but chose not to post it for reasons stated above. I didn't want to be smeared or have the perception since I had been threatened with legal action in the past for posts. As you recall, I called this coward out on it too. HC

Where's the outrage??? It's not a race issue (it usually isn't). This is a case of pure straight evil. They're animals that need to be taken out back and put down. I wonder if they'll try to rehabilitate them? Tragic...I can't believe I never heard about this.

Oh the Justice Bothers (Jesse n' Al) will be heard on this cause this was just a result of years of oppression by the man an lack of reperations for slavery.

Have you ever heard a more grotesque, inhuman, hate-filled story in your entire life?
Can you imagine not only the torture these kids went through, but what their parents are going through knowing this happened to their kids?
Rock is right. These aren't humans.
They're savage scum animals, and there is only 1 option in my book; swift dispatch.

Local media coverage

I dont see the difference in discussing this despicable crime as others discussed on these sites. What those animals did was horrific and they should be tried and after conviction executed, their color or race means nothing. To those that would use their color or race as a base for defense or condemnation should have their head examine for true racism and should not be in this profession. If you are a true professional police officer color or race will bear nothing in the manner in which you conduct your investigation, handle the public and deal with suspects, a true professional knows that evil comes in all colors, races and backgrounds bar none. My heart goes out to the family of the victims, that on top of having to deal with their loss have to endure all the other crap that people who see things only in black and white colors are throwing upon it.
Stay Safe

Can you possibly fathom the media circus and protests that would've taken place if this incident had been white on black?

The silence is deafening, someone show forward this story to Jay Severin, or someone else with the balls to talk about on the public airwaves.

Where is Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson calling for justice. Why are they not marching and spreading the lords word!!!

Some people I know say this is a racists site only when they see the shoe is on the other foot. Only white people are racists in their eyes.

Come on Now HC your first problem is your irish and all irish are racists I have been told. Your also a police officer so that makes you double racists. As well as you live in the Boston area so your triple racists. I know this because I have been told this on a annual occasion throughout my career.
