GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Police Lieutenant / Staff Assistant assists the Deputy Chief and Chief in the day-to-day operation of the Campus Police Department. As a working supervisor, the Lieutenant performs a variety of tasks relative to law enforcement. These tasks include, but are not limited to, supervision of subordinate personnel, crime prevention, patrol operations, training, and investigative assignments.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The Police Lieutenant performs assigned duties under the supervision and direction of the Police Chief and/or Deputy Chief who reviews work for conformance with relevant laws, rules, and standard operating procedures.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: The Police Lieutenant supervises Public Safety Department personnel of all subordinate grades, and reviews work for conformance with relevant laws, rules, and standard operating procedures.
CORE DUTIES:
1. Officer in Charge of the shift. Plans, supervises, and coordinates shift operations. Assigns tasks and plans duties for subordinate personnel.
2. Inspects and briefs officers at the start of shift. Routinely meets with, inspects, and instructs officers during shift.
3. Responds to major incidents and will assume responsibility for completion of all necessary public safety and police functions.
4. Supervises operations at special events on campus to ensure the preservation of the public peace, the security of the MassArt community, and compliance with college event policies.
5. Executes special assignments relative to police work and the administration of the Public Safety Department as required.
6. Conducts official criminal investigations. Enforces applicable local, State and Federal statutes.
7. Enforces applicable MassArt rules and regulations involving the safety and security of the college community.
8. Routinely briefs the Chief/Deputy Chief and other college administrators when appropriate and according to established standard operating procedures. Prepares written reports as required.
9.Performs all the duties required of a police officer on and about campus, including uniformed foot patrol as well as operation of department motor vehicles
10. Participates in activities arranged or authorized by the Department involving crime prevention and outreach programs for students and other members of the community
11. Assists, develops and conducts training classes for staff regarding policies and procedures.
12. Perform all other duties as may be assigned or required by law or by proper authority.

REQUIREMENTS:
1. Graduation from the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council Academy for municipal police officers, or the Massachusetts State Police Academy for campus police officers. Graduation from an out of state academy acceptable to the Massachusetts State Police Special Licensing Unit will be given due consideration.
2. Five or more years experience including; patrol, investigation, supervision, training, and administration in a campus police department, municipal police department, or other law enforcement agency.
3. Eligibility and successful completion of appointment as Massachusetts Special State Police Officer.
4. Eligibility and successful completion of appointment as a Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff.
5. Ability to work in a diverse, multi-cultural college community.
6. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
7. Advanced training in a broad range of police-related disciplines.
8. Computer literacy relative to the Department’s law enforcement technology including word processing, ID equipment, various alarm systems, and other security related software and hardware.
9. This is a security sensitive position. A thorough personal background check is required for this position
10. Must pass a medical examination arranged by the Public Safety Department. The physical requirements of the position will be discussed with the candidate at the job interview.
11. The Lieutenant is on call twenty-four hours a day for emergencies and critical situations.
12. Must possess a valid driver’s license to operate vehicles in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and have a satisfactory driving history.
13. Must possess at time of hire, or obtain during employee’s probationary period, certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillator operation.
14. Must possess at time of hire, or obtain during employee’s probationary period, certification for operation of Criminal Justice Information System computer.
PREFERENCES:
Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice preferred.
Emergency Medical Technician certification, Crime Prevention Officer certification, Rape Aggression Defense trainer certification, and certification(s) in other law enforcement related disciplines preferred.
SHIFT ASSIGNMENT:
Evening shift position: (3:00PM-11:00PM) or as assigned by the Chief of Police. Occasional off-shift work required. Occasional attendance at off-shift meetings and training sessions required.
May be assigned temporarily to cover absences on other shifts. Regularly scheduled days off may be changed on occasion if the Chief of the Department deems it necessary.
