A UNITING Church minister claims to have seen fresh blood stains inside the cell of an Aboriginal man whose complaint of police brutality ignited a riot on Tuesday night in which 300 people attacked the police station at Aurukun with rocks, metal bars and an axe.
Police reinforcements flew into the troubled Cape York community yesterday to restore order and Acting Premier Anna Bligh convened crisis talks in Brisbane as the Beattie Government's relations with Aborigines sank to a new low.
One of the six officers who barricaded themselves inside the station fired a warning shot into the floor with a private rifle when the angry mob broke down the front door and moved to attack.
The rioters then stole thousands of dollars worth of alcohol from the local pub and ransacked the general store.
Trouble began on Tuesday afternoon after rumours circulated that Warren Bell, 22, had been bashed in police custody.
Acting Police Commissioner Dick Conder and the Police Union yesterday insisted Mr Bell was injured during an earlier fight with his brother, a statement repeated by Ms Bligh and believed to be corroborated by a medical report provided to Health Minister Stephen Robertson and investigating authorities.
But their defence has done little to quell tensions in the indigenous community.

I would imagine if they had kangaroo-9's and set them free, they could have quelled the disturbance.
