Dunkin' Won't Let Man Use Wheelchair In Drive-Thru
(CBS4) WEYMOUTH Dunkin' Donuts says it will no longer serve a Weymouth man who uses his motorized wheelchair in the drive-up window.

Donald Hayes, 54, suffers from multiple sclerosis. Hayes said he has bought coffee via the drive-thru window at this Dunkin' Donuts before.

The store which is located in a shopping-market parking lot has no inside seating and only serves drive-up customers. But the store is now refusing Hayes service, citing traffic safety concerns.

Dunkin Donuts issued the following statement:

"While Dunkin' Donuts does not have a corporate policy regarding the use of wheelchairs in our drive-thrus, our number one priority is the safety of our customer. Our Franchisee's objective in this particular instance is to protect customers from potential injury in a traffic accident."

Hayes is considering legal action.

“I’m just defending my rights,” Hayes told the Boston Herald. “I’m not looking for monetary compensation.”

Hayes uses an MBTA van to get to the Dunkin' Donuts, but he said the van won't go through the drive-up window for riders.

At a gas station, the attendant is supposed to assist you if you can't reach the buttons for whatever reason.

If they don't want this guy going through the drive through, they should be setting something up for him...not being pricks about it. Don't people know what service is anymore?

I agree with you Frank, and no, people don't know what "service" is anymore.

That having been said, I'm still waiting for my first fatal car vs. "rascal". They are all over out here, driving in the road even when there are perfectly good sidewalks to operate on.

Maybe we could issue a cite for failure to display a "slow moving vehicle" placard ...

They should help him somehow if he is "the customer". But, if a vehicle doesn't see him at the drive thru he will be flat as a pancake.

This guys life must suck enough to have to take an MBTA van just to get a friggin' Dunkin' Donut's coffee, why not cut the guy some slack. Heaven forbid one of the staff dosent take 30 seconds and walk the damn cup out to him in the parking lot. Honey Dew is better anyway, too bad I can't find any out here

Nobody is going to cut you any slack when you don't see this guy in the dark or around the corner or whatever, and you hit him. Your life as you know it will be forever ruined.

In massachusetts There is a Dunkin Donuts every other block, I'm sure he can find one that will accomadate him.

My father uses a rascal type of scooter to get around and he drives like an maniac. I warn him all the time that he is not a car and that he can get hurt. He doesn't care, he loves the thing and goes EVERYWHERE on it. In fact, he uses it at the drive-thru Dunkin Donuts on Broadway in Everett and the staff treat him like some kind of celebrity and they love him. They let him order all the time. I guess it is up to each franchise if they want to allow it. I guess some of the independent D&D owners are just a$$holes.

Just wheel himself down to Park and Main St.'s where he can go INSIDE and be served by either D+D, or across the street at Marylou's (better joe and NICE help). Bonus, the hospital is up the hill, only a short scooter ride away....

Hell, I want to know how he drives down Broadway in that thing without taking the whole bottom end of it out in a pothole...or any of the other several dozen inconsistencies in that roadway.
