HAMPSTEAD, N.H. -- A band based in Manchester is about to embark on an unusual performance tour.
Groove Alliance will be performing in Iraq.
"It's terrifying, it's exciting, it's a whole mix of emotions, and my family is ready to kill me, but I'm ready to go," said Ray DeMartini.
DeMartini is the keyboard player for the nine-piece dance and show band. The members of Groove Alliance will depart for Iraq in mid-January for one week.
"It's an unbelievable amount of work to get 10 to 11 people access to Iraq. The average person can't just fly in there," said band member Jesse Silva.
Among the members of the group is Army Maj. Mike Pacheco. He's currently deployed in Baghdad. The band credits Pacheco with the idea of bringing the band to Iraq for what's being called the "Deadly Force Tour."
The group will offer concerts to benefit Iraqi children waiting for life-saving surgeries. There will also be a performance at the U.S. Embassy, one for soldiers in the Green Zone and a show at the combat support hospital.
A major international contractor in Iraq is helping to pay for the costs associated with getting the band to the country.
Groove Alliance will keep a log of its trip on its website for fans to check out.
