Warm Winter Hits Ice Fishing Business Hard
Web Editor: Matt Bush, Online Content Producer

The town of Bowdoinham is known as a Mecca for ice fisherman during the winter. But this warm winter is hitting the area hard.
According to the people who rent out ice fishing shacks on Bowdoinham's Merry Meeting Bay, they're used to seeing a village of ice fishermen on the Cathance River by the first of January.

However, this year has been anything but normal, there are still fisherman looking for smelts, but they don't have to cut through 6 inches of ice to drop their lines.

Across the river at Jim's Smelt Fishing Camps, business has been slow, but owner Jim Mcpherson isn't waiting for the cold.

Mcpherson fitted two of his ice shacks with Styrofoam pontoons and floated them out on the river. He says if Mother Nature won't cooperate, he'll adapt.

"Over the last few days with this real warm weather, what little ice we did have is gone. I could see things not going to well. So that's when I decided to try something different. I put some on floatation and so far it's working out pretty good," said Jim Mcpherson, Smelt Camp Owner.

Mcpherson says the only problem with the new shacks is the cost. He says it costs him about $500 to build an ice shack, while these two floating shacks cost him nearly $3,000.

He says as long as fishermen keep calling for reservations, he plans to leave the shacks out until early march.
