Patrick's Top Priorities

Patrick's `openness' extends to governor's private elevator

BOSTON (AP) -- The "openness" Deval Patrick pledged in his new gubernatorial administration extends to the elevator and reception area outside his third-floor Statehouse office suite.
On his first full day as governor, Patrick ordered a velvet rope barrier removed from the entrance to his office and said that visitors and reporters would be allowed to wait in the formerly closed reception area.
Patrick also declared that the elevator - held for the governor and shut down to the general public - be unlocked and returned to general duty. It is next to another elevator available to the public, frequently overcrowded because of its limited capacity.
"He just feels it's unnecessary to have it," Patrick spokeswoman Cyndi Roy said of the reserved elevator.
Patrick's predecessor, Republican Mitt Romney, used the private elevator, but his aides said it was reserved for the governor's use before he took office. Romney frequently jumped into the elevator to avoid questions from the media.
On Thursday, just after Patrick was sworn in as the first Democratic governor in 16 years, the last Democratic governor - Michael S. Dukakis - was heard loudly complaining to a State Police trooper who offered him use of the special elevator as Dukakis left a reception in Patrick's new office.
Dukakis pointed to the nearby crowd and urged that the elevator be put back in general service.
One day later, it was unlocked.
