Gardai deny hiding information about criminal convictions
13:23 Thursday January 4th 2007 The Gardai have rejected suggestions that they are hiding information about members of the force convicted of criminal offences. Newspaper reports yesterday revealed that 31 Gardai had been convicted of a range of different offences since 2005, many of them for drink-driving.
The reports said Garda Headquarters was not commenting on the figures and was refusing to reveal what disciplinary action had been taken.
However, a garda statement to the media today confirmed that seven of the 31 Gardai have been dismissed from the force, including one for possession of cannabis.
Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy says Gardai are dealt with and punished the same as any other person and there is no conspiracy to hide information or cover-up for members.
