Can anyone tell me about the BCPD, if it's a good dept. and such, benefits, pay. I am considering putting my app in since they are hiring 9 officers. Thanks for any info.

Posted by: pickels

They are a damn good department. They got all the goodies, guns, busy place. Especially when football games are on campus. The pay is very good from what I have been told. here is there web site www.bc.edu/police

Posted by: Radio1

They are a squared away department, lots of "toys" to play with. However, as far as dealing with the students; can't touch them, they have Diplomatic Immunity Same bull that private colleges have to deal with. The pay is excellent so I guess its up to whoever is applying for the job.

if you dont have "college policing" expierence they wont hire you....

take it from me. My time was waisted going thru the hiring process. 2 spots, and 2 final candidates. myself and another individual that is a member of this board.

after all was said and done, they decided to pass me over due to my lack of "college policing" expierence.

Good Luck to all that apply.....................

Thanks Nemo!!

I went to RAD training with a kid that worked there I guess it is a sweet place as money and benny's go but as for the students they walk all over you meaning that they are in good with the higher ups cant touch them get away with murder type stuff. I guess its like that in all of the private schools though cause we have the same problem at Curry only BC makes more so they put up with it!!

Posted by: kennyz123

Why are there so many openings?

Posted by: MarkBoston

Directly from their web site...

"Chief Morse's policing emphasis is focused on the educational aspects rather than on the punitive side of law enforcement."

I would swallow my tongue trying to be nice to some dirtbag college student.

Stop or I'll say Stop again!

Posted by: Doughnut33

kennyz- I think they just acquired a large amount of "new" property, although I can't confirm that this is the reason that facilitates the job openings.

Unfortunately this goes for 90% of all the schools in Mass. But hey making $$$$ and putting food on the table is really what it's all about.

Do the BC Police get time and a half for doing sporting events. BC Hockey, Football etc? What is there rate for OT?

Posted by: j809

Word has it that out of 9 positions only 2-3 people will be selected from outside. All the others will be internal applicants. So in order to get selected you really have to rock that interview or be extremely connected. Good luck

Doesn't hurt to try...

B.C. bought some of the former Archdioesce land over in Brookline. This is direct from someone I know at Boston College.

It was in the paper and News after the sale took place. Back in the early spring or late winter if I remember correctly... No big secret.

Are you sure you got the right department FUCOCK? I went to the academy with an officer from there and since he's been there for two years he made a couple of arrest and got the crap for it big time. All of them hate it, there's not much OT and you get in BIG trouble if you make an arrest. Oh yeah, you can't make an arrest until the Sergeant comes down and he says OK, because he wants to make sure PC exists? He and a bunch of others are leaving or have left and not one of them is happy there, maybe except the Chief.

Any one here about the jobs yet?

Posted by: dsm290

I have heard absolutely nothing......what is going on?

Posted by: Patrick258

Jobs what jobs?

Posted by: briand911

Bc is just like every other department the only days I bet that things get going are during football and hockey ........... Kmf you know it was the same way at Wentworth its all the same no matter what college you go to

Posted by: Zuke

I believe a group of candidates have been interviewed and had the psych test. If you haven't heard anything by now, I would guess you can stop holding your breath.

Posted by: j809

My buddy already had the interview and background started after he had the package ready at the interview.

Posted by: DisturbedCop

A buddy of mine just finished the psych today. Next he has to turn in the background package, and who knows from there. He has some pretty decent qualifications:
1. Full time in Laconia N.H. for two years.
2. Full MA Academy.
3. A LOT OF PULL.

I'm not sure that I should resurrect this old post, but I just joined this board yesterday and can offer some insight into BCPD.

I have a friend who is a "higher up" at BCPD, and I worked there part-time in the 1980s for ~9 years as an Aux PO. IIRC the current chief is retired MSP, my friend introduced me to him a number of years ago when my Wife and I were watching the Boston Marathon in front of BC.

BC has more money than GOD, they take the LE training very seriously, they have their own Simunitions setup and do firearms training either weekly or monthly (I can't recall which). Some of their officers are certified to fly armed, four officers fly with their football teams to away games, they've been involved in the riot control issues surrounding the Patriots and Red Sox victories, etc.

Although they do some very serious police work, they also do a lot of "take Sister/Father x to location y". I used to have them on my scanners and hear this stuff all the time.

They pay well, but the students "know their rights" and are treated like kings/queens (and some will be one day when they grow up)! Yes, working campus police is VERY different than being a PO in a town. They do pamper the pompous brats who act up at BC, as alumni and their parents are what makes the college very wealthy by anyone's standards.

Even the Aux POs get OT rates for the games. It was a good deal during the time I was there. I worked Friday and Saturday nights (1900-0300) in the dorms and the football games. When I wanted to cut back to only one night and the games, the Sgt who was in charge of the Aux POs got pissed and dropped me from the program. Since I was also working a full-time ~50 hr/week job, I was getting tired of killing every weekend too and I just let it go.

As for the hiring, my friend tells me that they are sorting through the applicants that they received now.

Posted by: jyanis

I noticed that they re-posted a job(s) in the paper a few weeks ago. Anyone know what the deal is?

They wanted to hire 9 and only hired 3 last time around.
Let the games begin..again.

Posted by: jyanis

Anyone heard anything new? I just got a call for an interview.

Posted by: MB

I think they still have 4 more slots to fill. How was the interview? There are a total of 3 right.

I hope you read my prior post in this thread?

Campus Police is a VERY different job than being a "street cop" in a city/town. I worked with a few guys at BCPD that had problems with this. Your job is really to PROTECT the students (and faculty), rather than busting them for every infraction. That said, they make plenty of arrests, get involved with Internet crime (some international in scope), etc. In some regards they seem to get deeper into some types of high-tech crime than many local PDs. The location is "tri-town" and "tri-county", so if you use it as a "stepping stone" and do a good job, you have a lot more exposure to other PDs/courts/DAs than you would likely have in a town/city.

Not insignificant if you have kids is that if you work there for a certain amount of time, all your kids can go to BC for FREE! That's one hell of a benefit that no town/city can match. BC is a top-notch college. I haven't got a bad thing to say about the place . . . I enjoyed my time there (even though I was a PT Auxiliary PO with no powers) and I found most of the students decent to deal with. [Disclaimer: As a PT Aux, I didn't pay attention to any of the politics that a FT PO might have to endure, so my view is hardly a complete and accurate view of working there FT.]

Posted by: Mitpo62

Thanks for the info. The paperwork has been "electronically transmitted." Must keep it on the QT though.....

Posted by: catfish

Does anyone have a ballpark figure for their starting pay?

Posted by: LenS

I thought it was posted in the jobs listing here. All their salary levels are posted (IIRC) on the web in the open jobs section.

Posted by: catfish

Thanks, maybe I should look before I speak.

Posted by: Mitpo62

Anyone receive acknowledgments of their packets yet? Just curious.....

Posted by: Mikey682

I applied and havent heard anything. Just like last time and the time before that. And like Harvard.

Posted by: Mitpo62

A buddy of mine applied and got a call Friday afternoon ref. interviews. They are setting up the interviews for June 8, 9, and 10. Rolling right along.......

Posted by: Mitpo62

This was posted again. Maybe I can go 2 for 2....again.
