Gas Drive offs

Does anyone else have a problem with gas drive offs.

My city as well as many other Municipalities have and issue with a few gas stations that refuse to pay first then pump. This is an entirely preventable crime and the gas station should be held responible. My Dept will only take reports. We will not do any follow up investigations for the business.
As far as I am concerned, it is a business transaction....let them handle it as a civil matter. I also think the business should have to come down to the police station and file a report instead of wasting a PO's time. Many times there was a problem with the gas stations credit card reader where the person tried to pay but it didn't go through. I do understand that there are some real larcenies of gas and that is up to the officer's discretion to weed out the b/s ones with the real crimes.

Thanks for letting me rant & rave about this.....

There is a Cumberland Farms in my town, next to an I-95 ramp always getting drive offs, corporate policy is not to force pre payment as a convinience to the customers and to get them to come in the store to pay and possibly make impulse purchases. We don't follow up on most of the drive offs unless they are locals and at most just make a phone call telling them to payup.

Hmmm... happens at just about all gas stations in my city that don't require pre-payment... so are you saying that there is only 1 gas station in your town Macop?

If the employee has a plate we might try to make contact with the RO.. most of the time, however, they dont have a plate... we might scratch out a quick report or we might tell them to stop giving away gas to their friends and leave, depends on the situation... there is one case i recall though where the same person in the same vehicle hit the same gas station 4 times in less than two weeks, the officer did investigate and took out charges against the individual.
