DUTIES: (1) This is an entry-level position with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office involving the care, safety, order and discipline of a large inmate population. Officers will be assigned to detention centers where they will work 86 hours every pay period. Duties include: control, counseling, inmate training, health care assessments, and transporting of inmates within the confines of the unit. Positions also require ability to deal with wide variety of persons in the most challenging environments and situations; the ability to acclimate to an environment of advancing technology with automated controls supported by computer software that requires computer literacy; and ability to meet training and testing performance levels mandated by the NC Sheriffs' Ed. & Trng. Stds. Commission for Jail Justice Officers. Rotating shift work is required. (2) This is an entry-level position with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office Arrest Processing Center involving the fingerprinting, photographing, escorting, and booking of arrestees to the magistrate. This position requires the ability to deal with a wide variety of persons in the most challenging environments and situations; the ability to acclimate to an environment of advancing technology; and, the ability to meet training and testing performance levels mandated by the NC Sheriffs' Education & Training Stds. Commission. Rotating shift work is required and officers will work 86 hours every pay period.
REQUIREMENTS: (1) Applicant must: have high school diploma/equivalent; be 21 years of age; be of good moral character; be a US citizen; pass initial screening (must meet Sheriff's minimum standards); attend an applicant orientation; pass extensive background investigation including employment and personal references; pass a drug test; pass a physical examination; take a polygraph. Experience in law enforcement, corrections or the military is a plus. (2) Applicant must be NC BLET certified; have high school diploma/equivalent; 21 years of age; be of good moral character; be US citizen; pass initial screening; pass extensive background investigation; pass drug test; pass physical exam; take polygraph; live within a 50-mile radius of jail central. Experience is preferred, however, applicants without experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
