Rhode Island State Police - Questions?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Hello, I conducted a search but was un able to get anything with any value. One is that I was wondering if anyone had anyinfo on the Rhode Island State Police? I have seen more posts on VT and NH but nothing about RI. The only reason why I am really asking is that I live somewhat close to the border and trying to have a back up plan in case I end up being on the civil service list for 20 years.

From what I understand is that they have a 6 month live in academy. I have gone to their website and it says to down load an application packed and that info about testing and other materials will be mailed to me.

Has anyone here had any experiences with the hiring process or just any involvement with the agency in general? Are they squared away well equipped etc? Thanks all I appreciate your responses.

They are extremely squared away, very very respectful officers.

Yes, their academy is 6 mo, residental. I wouldnt plan on RISP being your "backup" plan... They've got about 200 guys on the road now, so probably an equal ammount in support services. An agency that small isn't one you'll be "falling back" on..

hmm..interesting i wasnt aware that it was such a small force. I mean I understand that RI is a small state and obviously can be very selective if they so choose to be. I was just currious since i know some people who have landed jobs in RI as muni police officers with out a whole lot of experience or a tailored resume.

200 guys on the road. Wishfull thinking. 90 is more like it. 200 with support staff.

HELPme-

kmf is on the money on this one. They are an A-1 first class department. When I first got on full-time it was a PD in Rhode Island and I was also on the waiting list for
RISP (Me and about 150 other guys for about 30 slots) This was back in the early 90's
when I was right out of college. The whole process for getting on RISP was incredible.
Fitness Test was something out of Paris Island (Troopers yelling in your face while
doing sit-ups, running beside you yelling while you're doing the 1.5 mile run).

I guess the point I'm getting across is that this PD is NOT a fallback. At the point I
took the Fitness Test I had taken 5-6 fitness tests for various departments through-
out NE and by far that was the most demanding and, as I thought afterward, the most rewarding....I thought THIS IS THE PD I WANT TO WORK FOR.

If you want the RISP you're going to have to really WANT IT.

Just my 2 cents

They have take home cruisers and for some reason ALWAYS wear their campaign hats in their cruisers. Probably a Department Policy.

Oh no, I think you mistook my phrasing. What I meant was as an alternative to Massachusetts. Not something to putter around on while Mass plays mind games. My gf lives in Rhode Island and we are thinking of moving in together and she wants to stay down there yada, yada, so to make a long story short I am just looking for other prospective departments to try and get on. Many here favor NH I am just trying to gather information on this department since it is not discussed as much on this site. Like I stated earlier I do not have much information on this department other then what I have read on their website. I took a class from a RISP Investigator on research methods last year and he was squared away. I never got the opportunity to ask him how large the dept is how testing is etc.

Thank you all for the replies and sorry for the misunderstanding

Yea, we have him at Western New England College. He seems like a nice guy. I finished up this past term and did not have to take Research Methods due to my enrollment year (thank god for grandfathering) but my buddy did. He said that he is REALLY TOUGH as a professor but a nice guy. He also said that Mr. Gallo was fair to deal with. That I think is the best combo for any professor. He should go far at WNEC.

Wow a suite to take the test? The last CS test i took there was one kid in a full suite and EVERYONE was bashing him for wearing it. Even the old slobs that monitor the halls while you take the test were giving the kid a hard time.

Yes that research methods class was a bitch. EVERYONE dropped out of the class but me. I had a small class of 5 and by the end I was the only one taking the final..lol Gotta love that one on one instruction and the 30 page manuscript he makes you write. You could say i got my moneys worth..lol You are correct though he is a fair professor and not really a ball buster that knows the deal. Glad to hear he is doing good there.

USMC- You're absolutely right! I must be getting old, how could I forget!

I remember doing the sit-ups and my tie kept getting in my face.

I also had to dry-clean my suit 3 TIMES before I could wear it again !!!

Took the RI State Police Exam last time! Wore a full suit and Tie (Required to sit for the exam) Stood at attention in a line for over 1 hour before even signing in. Last I checked there were 235 RI Troopers from Top to Bottom. Took the exam with over 7,000. They choose 35 for the academy. Which is actually 7 Months and a Stress Academy like MSP. You have a better chance of seeing God than getting on! -Southwick
