Oversees the operation of the police department, working under the general supervision of the Board of Selectmen. Responsible for the planning, directing, coordinating, controlling, and staffing of all activities in the department. Department has 1 Deputy Chief, 8 Sergeants, 12 Officers, 6 Dispatchers, and administrative support. Operating budget is $2,400,00. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and supervisory skills; understanding of community policing strategies; experience in dealing with school officials, parents, and students; understanding of local, state, and federal laws, including labor laws; experience in developing and implementing training programs; working knowledge of municipal finance procedures; understanding of procurement and maintenance of equipment and facilities; grant writing experience; and ability to communicate effectively with town officials, school officials, employees, citizens, various agencies, and media. Salary range: $85,000 to $100,000, plus Quinn bill educational incentive and benefits package.
Requirements: Require candidates with a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field (Masters degree is preferred). Require 10 years of police experience, at least 5 of which have been in a supervisory capacity. Must be a graduate of the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council's Basic Training Course for Police Officers or obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
