SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Incumbents of positions at this level receive general supervision from Campus Police Officers or other employees of higher grade who provide training on police procedures, assign work and review performance through inspection, conferences and reports for effectiveness and compliance with standard police practices, laws, rules and regulations.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
1.Patrols the buildings, grounds and adjacent areas of the State educational institution and enforces State laws as well as the rules and regulation of the institution.
2.Maintains order among visitors and students, directs traffic and parking of automobiles.
3.Exercises police powers in the detection and apprehension of law violators; investigates accidents and complaints; patrols roads on campus.
4.Serves court summonses on staff personnel and students.
5.Guards against trespass, theft, damage to property or injury to individuals by screening visitors; inspecting rooms, packages and vehicles for explosives, firearms and other contraband; controlling crowds; providing personal protection to individuals as required; conducting surveillance of high crime areas; searching for missing goods and persons; investigating complaints and reports of suspicious activity; mediating disputes; and inspecting buildings, grounds, firelanes and emergency exits for compliance with safety standards to ensure campus security.
6.Prepares reports on investigations conducted and noteworthy incidents occurring during the tour of duty.
7.Operates such equipment as two-way radios, teletypes, facsimile transmitters or receivers, base stations, public address systems, emergency medical equipment, office machines, patrol recording devices and riot control equipment.
8.Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.High school diploma or equivalence required.
2.Working knowledge of police procedures and fire prevention methods.
3.Working knowledge of the law of arrest and criminal procedure in the lower courts.
4.Ability to prepare written reports of investigations.
5.Ability to deal with the public and maintain student discipline.
6.Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
7.Ability to remain alert in apprehending prowlers and others.
8.Ability to meet department training requirements in criminal law and first aid.
9.Ability to walk long hours alone, both indoors and out under varying climatic conditions.
10.Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
11.Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations.
12.Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules and regulations governing assigned unit activities.
13.Must successfully complete the sixteen-week Campus Police Academy certified by the Massachusetts State Police. Ability to meet departmental training requirements through various in-service training programs.
