One year ago, criminals tangled with a state police trooper, pulled a gun and fired, killing Trooper Joseph Pokorny along the Parkway West.
On Monday, his brethren in law enforcement honored Pokorny by taking other criminals off the streets in a major multilevel sweep.
The 22-year veteran of the state police died during a violent traffic stop last year
"One year ago today, I was awakened to be told of the death of Corp. Joseph Pokorny," said Maj. Frank Monaco, of the Pa. State Police.
In his honor, state police and Pittsburgh police zeroed in on Pittsburgh's neighborhoods.
"Some of the neighborhoods, there was a lot of violence," said Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper. "That's why they were targeted."
In total, 21 people who police said are a threat to citizens and police were arrested.
"They will also no longer be a danger to the officers that patrol these neighborhoods," said U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan.
The sweep is the first of several paid for with a special $124,000 grant, and more are expected.
As for the suspect in Pokorny's death, Leslie Mollett was arrested in January and is awaiting trial.
