As part of its efforts to prepare residents for the Jan. 1 merger of the Indianapolis police and Marion County sheriff's departments, the city has created a Web site ( http://www.indygov.org/eGov/Law/home.htm )that it hopes will answer people's questions about the new force.
The site will offer six videos about the new Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. One video was on the site Tuesday; the rest are expected to be posted before the merger, 6News' Norman Cox reported.
The first video shows, among other things, a map of IMPD's six police districts and a map of neighborhood beats.
It also answers frequently asked questions, such as, "What number do I call for police?" (The emergency number still will be 911; non-emergency calls should go to 317-327-3811.)
After the merger, all IMPD cars will have the same logo, but not all cars will immediately have the same color. New IMPD cars will be gray, but because repainting would be too expensive, the old police and sheriff's cars will keep their white and tan colors, respectively.
Most officers will wear navy blue uniforms. Officers with ranks of major or above will wear white shirts.
People who have questions about the merger that the videos don't answer can call 317-327-6374 during business hours.
The city's outreach program goes beyond the Web site. City and police leaders plan to speak before community groups over the next three weeks, answering as many questions as possible before the merger, Cox reported.
