A beer-spitting, tequila-swilling Framingham detective faces criminal charges and may be bounced from the force for allegedly waving a loaded pistol at two fellow officers.
The “extremely” drunk 35-year-old cop is also accused of pointing his pistol out of a car the same night as his buddies were trying to drive him home.
Michael E. Doherty will now be arraigned on three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon in connection with a Sept. 12 incident in Framingham, according to records at Framingham District Court.
Doherty has been on paid leave since Oct. 10, and will face an “appointing authority” hearing on Dec. 19 to determine if there is just cause to dismiss him from the department, Framingham Police Chief Steven Carl said yesterday.
“There is no other choice. It’s a matter of the public trust,” said Carl.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Framingham District Court, Doherty was at the home of a fellow cop on Sept. 12 when he had eight shots of tequila and beer and became drunk.
He’s accused of pointing a loaded semi-automatic Sig Sauer handgun at a fellow officer, waving it out of a car window while being driven home and fetching a second gun and pointing it at colleagues once inside, records state.
In all cases, fellow officers emptied the ammo from the gun, court records state.
The guns were later confiscated and Carl has suspended Doherty’s license to carry a firearm.
