After chase, crash, man and woman are captured, arrested

By Patriot Ledger staff

BRAINTREE - A man and woman have been charged with possession of heroin and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Braintree police said Anthony Ortiz, 23, of Braintree, and Kelly Guardiola, 20, of Jamaica Plain, were under surveillance on Church Street in Braintree. When they left Church Street in a gray Ford Crown Victoria at about 8 p.m. Wednesday, Detective Mark Sherrick followed them.

Sherrick, working with Detective Brian Cohoon, tried to stop the vehicle at the Union Street rotary when the suspect’s vehicle hit another car in front of it. The suspect vehicle then backed up and hit Sherrick’s vehicle and nearly rammed Cohoon as they attempted to flee. Cohoon took evasive action to avoid a collision.

After fleeing south on Route 3, the vehicle lost control in Duxbury and Ortiz and Guardiola were taken into custody. A search of the vehicle, with the assistance of a State Police K-9 unit, revealed heroin, Braintree police said.

Sherrick was originally watching the Church Street residence after police received a tip that Ortiz, wanted on multiple arrest warrants from Lawrence District Court, was there.

Ortiz was charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, possession of heroin, possession of a false RMV document and giving a false name to police.

Guardiola was charged with possession of heroin, Braintree police said.

A subsequent search of the Church Street home on Thursday turned up additional heroin, drug paraphernalia and materials associated with the packaging and distribution of heroin, police said.

As a result, Guardiola and Ortiz were also charged with possession with intent to distribute heroin, and conspiracy to violate the controlled substance act in a drug-free school zone. The Church Street home is within 1,000 feet of Archbishop Williams High School.

Ortiz and Guardiola were arraigned in Quincy District Court on Thursday.
