HINGHAM - A Boston man has been charged with breaking into a computer store and stealing almost $20,000 worth of media players.
Hingham Police Lt. Michael Peraino said an alarm company reported a glass-in-motion alarm at the Apple computer store at the Derby Street Shoppes at about 1:30 a.m. yesterday.
When officers arrived, they found the front door was shattered and a section of iPods had been cleaned out, Peraino said. ‘‘They also noticed a lot of blood leading inside the store to where the iPods were,’’ Peraino added.
While a report was being sent to other communities, Weymouth police officers stopped a black Jeep Cherokee on Front Street at Winter Street, because its rear license plate was covered with a black plastic bag.
Weymouth officers reported that the driver’s right hand was cut, and Hingham police made the connection to the robbery.
Peraino said that police found more than 50 iPods in the back seat of the vehicle.
The driver, Joseph M. Dillon, 48, of 235 Gold St., was arrested and taken to South Shore Hospital for treatment, then held at the Hingham police station without bail. Dillon faces several charges, including was charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony, larceny from a building, larceny over $250, malicious destruction of property over $250, breaking glass in a building, and possession of burglarious tools.
Peraino said the stolen iPods had a value of $19,600.
