What academy do unarmed college PO's go to?

I'm new to MA, was a CSO in another state and have finally landed a LEO position here....My questions are:

1)What academy do college PD's send their new hires to?

2)Since I just moved here(in July) and missed the civil service test (in April), do I have to wait until after next April to qualify to get on with a city dept even though I'm a college LEO? (I believe MA has a one year residency requirement in order to take the civil service....Since I missed in April and moved here in July, does that mean I'll have to wait two years to test?)

Thanks in advance for your help....this site is helping me a great deal when it comes to learning how things work out here.

It looks like that you got a lot to learn.
In regards Campus Police you are in the right thread, look around and you will find an answer, in regards civil service go to the CIVIL SERVICE thread and you will find a lot of good information there.
The next POLICE OFFICER TEST IS MAY 19, 2007
Good luck and stay safe.

Most Massachusetts college departments send all new hires through the 16 week SSPO Academy run by the MSP.

The Colleges who don't send you to the SSPO academy send people to the Mass Criminal Training Coucil Reserve Interminient Academy. However, most new hires have that already since it is a part time course offered on Saturdays's and in the evening.

I don't think the R/I academy has firearms training.

All the State College and the Umass System send their officers to the Special State Police Academy.

The Civil Service test for the MBTA and Municipalities is given every two years in the Spring.

Many of the officers at the larger schools like BU, Harvard, MIT and Umass Amhearst have attended the regular municipal academy.

Not all state colleges go to the SSPO. BSC is one of few (if not the only one) that sends officers to the full municipal academy.

MSP is holding a Reserve Intermittent Academy over the winter break at Framingham State College. For more info go to

Boston College does as well. Or at least with their last recruits, to the MBTA academy

I stand corrected. I ment to state that all State institutions of higher learning eithier have the SSPO or the regualr academy. Thanks for the correction.

Does Bridgewater have a problem keeping officers after they have attended the regualr academy?
