A man taking truck driving lessons at an area school is in custody after allegedly causing a terror scare.
Police arrested Mohammed Y. Mullawala, 28, of Jamaica, N.Y., on Dec. 5. on a visa violation.
Last month, the Department of Homeland Security was notified of Mullawala's alleged suspicious activity by a truck driver school in Smithfield.
The Nationwide Tractor Trailer Driving School reported that Mullawala was not interested in actually learning how to handle a truck and wanted only to get a commercial driver's license.
Detectives tracked down Mullawala and discovered he has driver's licenses from three states. They then worked to bring him in for questioning.
Mullawala's actions raised red flags for the driving school.
"They became suspicious based on his overactivity, his zest and the speed that he wanted to attain that license was very strange," said Maj. Steven O'Donnell of the Rhode Island State Police. "And not wanting to learn to drive the truck properly and wanting to drive hazardous material."
Mullawala has an expired student visa and is being held in Boston by immigration authorities.
Mullawala is scheduled to have a hearing next week and faces possible deportation.
