TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- There'd been other misconduct complaints against him before. But Florida's Supreme Court said Judge John Sloop, 57, finally went too far.
Sloop is being ruled unfit for the bench after an incident in which he jailed 11 people who were late for traffic court. They were late because they'd been sent to the wrong courtroom. And even though two other judges and a bailiff explained what happened, Sloop had them locked up and strip-searched.
Another judge began paperwork to release them while Sloop was running an errand, but the motorists were not freed until they had been strip-searched and spent nine hours behind bars, the high court noted.
In its ruling, the court apologized to the victims. The judges also cited Sloop for what they call his "indifference" to the humiliation and hardship the victims faced.
Sloop accepts responsibility, and blamed his actions on what was then an undiagnosed case of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
