I received an email yesterday about an opening at Bryant University in Smithfield Rhode Island ( about 20 minutes outside of Providence). The only thing I know about Bryant is the Patriots used to practice there years ago.

The posting had the usual discription of duties and they wanted the usual qualifications including a EMT certificate preference.

Now I realize that the pay at some schools is low, put I was shocked that what was discribed as a major university would pay a new fulltime Campus Cop. $12.25 per hour. I know contract security companies that start people with no experience at 13.00 bucks an hour.

What kind of applicants do they think they are going to attract at $12.25 per hour? I know someone just out of College could live on that, if they still lived with their parents. But, how do they expect anyone to be able to pay rent on that wage?

However, if anyone is interested, they do have an opening for an Lt. with a paygrade of between 19.25 and 23.75 which isn't bad. One would think you could make 60k with overtime.

Yeah their pay sucks. I am in smithfield quite alot and i dont know too much about their department but have heard to stay away. Also their pay is on par with another school except this one begins with a D. If you want to break into LE its something to put on the resume.

Just keep in mind they are Security or public safety and not police, thats why the pay is low. Only colleges in RI that have police are brown and the state colleges. URI is close to a "real pd" as its a bigger campus and has off campus housing. CCRI and RIC are police in name only, are not armed and are mainly security in duties.

Brown is good but they usually want academy grads aka: retired cops or ones who transfer over

CCRI is basically security but they send you to the regular municipal police academy. I would stay away from Bryant College. They get pissed on by the student and have to call Smithfield Police for anything.

URI is unarmed also, the only campus police dept in RI that carries firearms is Brown University Police Dept. RICC is like a security dept but they do send you to the municiple Academy. So if your looking for an easy way to get into a RI town look for the RICC job and apply when it opens. It seem like to me the RI and mass do not get the idea of the right tools we need as a police officer. UMMMMMMMMMMMM GUNS!!!!

Bryant is Public safety I saw the pay scale and it's very low.

Public Safety does not always mean non-Police.

CCRI Police only carry cuffs (No OC Spray)and a radio. URI Police carry the standard unarmed Campus Police Type Equipment (OC Spray, Cuffs, I think a Baton, etc.) No Guns. CCRI mostly does lock and key, as one poster said only police in name, but they do have Ford Taurus Cruisers. RICC I don't know if they carry more then handcuffs.

Rhode Island is behind Mass. (there are some out there) in their view of college/university policing. Brown does carry but only after years (I mean YEARSSSSSSSSSSSSSS*) of working on it. URI is 'looking' at the idea but that's about it so far. CCRI does have a PD but I spoke with a LT. there about a year and a half ago and after listening to him, it sounds like many of the guys are retired city cops. New young guys come and go through a revolving door.

RIC states in it's website that all of their personnel have prior experience, which translates, to me, a bunch of retirees.

Bryant IS Public Safety and does NOT have 'arrest' powers but they enforce college regulations and handle medicals and do patrol work. No, it's not a place for someone who wants to do real police work, but it's a place to get some practical experience while earning a few bucks. Hell, take a few classes while you're at it and really build up the old resume. If you find you like it, well, then stick with it. At least your kids can go to college for zip.

Oh, just to add something; I put an asterisk next to the comment about Brown. The reason being, I have a copy of the Brown Alumni Journal from 1982 in which one of the chief topics is firearms. The then Chief was supportive but playing the political game. Hey, he had to. I think he figured he'd get more with honey than vinegar. It didn't work. Here it is 2007 and only last year did they start to carry on a regular basis.

Bryant and the schools like it are doing the same job in many respects as the rest of us. Having no powers of arrest and not having the proper equipment is a handicap, but think about it, how often do we all get calls where neither is necessary and yet it's still part of the job. I feel way too much emphasis is placed on if you can arrest and/or pepper spray or shoot someone. Is it nice to have these options? OF COURSE! Is it a good thing? OF COURSE! Can it make the job easier? Sometimes, OF COURSE! But let's be really honest, a well organized in-house security department is doing much of the same as we're doing much of the time. They're just at a disadvantage, yet they still do it and God bless 'em for it.
