FREETOWN — This Thanksgiving was a huge disappointment for those who usually rely on donations to the Council on Aging's Serve program for a free holiday meal. They were nearly non-existent.
There were enough donations to feed only four or five needy families for the month of November.
Council on Aging Director Barbara Place took phone calls from those looking for help and unfortunately had to tell those families there were no free meals available at the time. With Christmas right around the corner, it did not look promising.
Just when desperation was about to set in, the men in blue stepped up to help feed 20 needy families this year at $22 a pop — just in time for Christmas.
When Sgt. Elton Ashley told Ms. Place the Police Association was pitching in for 20 meals, she was overjoyed.
"This is a good, good thing. We are very happy," she said. "I got so excited, because we just didn't have it for Thanksgiving. In the past, we've always done it."
Those eligible families will enjoy a basket with a 10- to 14-pound turkey, potatoes, squash, stuffing, biscuits, gravy and pumpkin pie filling. The names of the individuals who will receive the baskets will remain anonymous.
Donations are needed by tomorrow for those who would like to contribute to the holiday program, since the food is ordered a month in advance. Those who can't make that cut-off are still encouraged to donate, since many families still struggle after the holidays right through the winter months.
Ms. Place said she can't thank the Police Department enough for its generous gift.
"It's such a relief," she said.
Those interested in donating can mail or drop off checks to the Freetown Serve Program, 227 Chace Road, Freetown, MA 02717. For more information, call the Council on Aging at (50 763-9557.
