A 14 year old boy is recovering from surgery after being shot Monday evening by a Lantana police officer. The shootting took place on Hyatt Ave., just north of Boynton Beach. The officer who pulled the trigger, said it was self defense, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff's Spokesman Sgt. Pete Palenzuela. The holiday lights in the Lantana nieghborhood were dim compared to those coming from the police car headlights. At around 6 p.m. Monday night, an on-duty Lantana police motorcycle officer was following a gold Dodge Neon. It was reportedly a stolen car. Police said the driver noticed the cop behind him, pulled in reverse, and tried to run over the motorcycle. The officer then jumped off. "The vehicle once again came at the officer," said Palenzuela. "Tthis time the officer was on foot. It's the second time the vehicle attempted to strike the officer. He was in fear for his life, drew his firearm and fired several shots at the driver." There were three teenage boys in the Neon. The driver, 14 years old, was taken to Delray Medical Center A 16 year old cooperated with police, and another 16 year old fled on foot. Police said in this case the car is the weapon. So far, no arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed. The Lantana Police department will conduct a standard internal affairs investigation, while the officer is on paid administrative leave. Police ask that if you have any information about the third young man in the stolen car, call PBSO or Lantana Police.
