Arkansas State Police were investigating an incident Monday in which a police officer reportedly shot a man who refused to drop his weapon, according to Lee Motes, chief deputy with the Hot Spring County
sheriff 's office.
Area firefighters had responded to a report Monday morning of a house fire on Golden Jones Road near Magnet Cove, but were prevented from fighting the fire by an armed man identified as Kenneth Brown, 40, Motes said.
"The suspect evidently was trying to keep them from getting to the fire," Motes said, adding that it was unknown if the property belonged to Brown.
A police officer from the nearby town of Rockport was called to the scene and was injured by the man. Motes said he could not be more specific. He said the officer later shot Brown after he refused to lay down his gun.
Brown was taken to St. Joseph's Mercy Health Center in Hot Springs, where he was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon.
As for the officer, Motes said, "He's all right." Asked about the incident, Lt. Glenn Sligh of the Arkansas State Police troop at Hope said, "We're assisting Rockport Police Department with an officer involved in a shooting." He said he had no details of the shooting nor did he know the medical condition of those involved. Telephone calls to the Rockport Police Department were not returned Monday.
Magnet Cove is north of Malvern on Arkansas 51.
