PLYMOUTH - A Sandwich man whose driver’s license was revoked for life two years ago for drunken driving is being charged with an eighth offense.

Police say Robert Marapoti, 46, had been drinking when he rammed the back of his daughter’s car at the intersection of Hedges Pond Road and State Road Saturday night.

Marapoti had arranged to meet his daughter, 21, at Tedeschi’s in Cedarville about 8 p.m. Saturday to follow her to the family’s house in Plymouth, police said.

But Marapoti was asleep at the wheel when his daughter arrived, police said.

She told officers she woke him up, saw he was drunk and left.

He drove after her and crashed into the back of her car as she slowed to turn into Hedges Pond Road, according to police.

Marapoti pulled into a Shaw’s supermarket parking lot. His daughter left and went to Jordan Hospital for the treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Marapoti told officers he’d had a couple of beers.

He is being charged with eighth-offense drunken driving, driving without a license and failure to use care in stopping.

He was taken to Jordan Hospital and transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was admitted and released the following day.

Plymouth police Capt. Michael Botieri said police generally wait to make a drunken-driving arrest if the driver has been injured.

‘‘If it’s obvious that a person is going to be transported to the hospital, we’ll sometimes wait on the arrest to see what happens at the hospital,’’ Botieri said.

Marapoti was obviously injured, but police did not know the extent of those injuries. After he was taken to Boston, police decided to seek a court summons for his arraignment.

Botieri said officers rarely know the extent of a person’s drunken driving history at the scene.

‘‘They’re usually busy with the incident at hand,’’ he said. ‘‘The history comes up at booking when we run the person's record.’’

Police say Marapoti may have taken the 1990 Mercedes he was driving and its license plate from a Bourne auto dealership and could face more charges.

His drunken-driving record dates back to 1978 in Hanover. He was found responsible for subsequent offenses in Hingham in 1982 and Whitman in 1983.

He was convicted in Carver in 1989, and Barnstable in 1996. He was sentenced to two years in jail for driving drunk in Plymouth in 2001. His driving record shows that his license was revoked for life after a 2004 drunken driving arrest in Sandwich. He was also sentenced to 2½ years in jail for the offense in Sandwich.

Why the hell was this guy not in jail 7 pror offences what the hell?

Posted by: btoc343

I totally agree, how many more chances are they going to give this guy. I guess he must have to kill someone first before he goes to jail.

This guy is a danger to the public and should be locked up with no possibility of Parole. Woops meant to say that after the third offense, oh well.

daughter is not going to testify that dad was drunk. he was asleep.
daughter is going to admit under cross examination that she may have stopped short and that is why she was rear ended.

no field sobriety, no breath test, your case is going downhill fast.
