LAKEVILLE — Police used a stun gun to subdue a suspected car thief who allegedly kicked out the window of a Lakeville cruiser and left one officer with glass embedded in his hand during a struggle Monday night.
Lakeville police said they answered a call at 23 Clark Road about a homeowner chasing a man who had stolen a car out of his driveway and found that the suspect had run into the woods.
A short time later, Lakeville Officer Antonio Amaral and Freetown Sgt. Steve Abbott — who had been called in for assistance — spotted William Reed, 39, walking out of the woods on Susan Lane.
When police tried to apprehend Mr. Reed, he struggled, breaking the window, before Sgt. Abbott used the department-issue Taser, which incapacitates suspects by means of a powerful electrical charge.
Sgt. Abbott was later treated for a wrist injury and pieces of glass in his hand. Another officer hurt during the arrest refused treatment at the scene, police said.
Mr. Reed faces two counts of assault and battery on a police officer and one count each of larceny of a motor vehicle, felony breaking and entering at night, malicious and wanton destruction of property over $250, operating with a revoked license, operating to endanger and disorderly conduct.
