SOMERSET, Mass. -- A standoff at a Super 8 Motel in Somerset ended peacefully Tuesday with the arrest of a wanted man.
A SWAT team surrounded the motel Monday night after police noticed a car in the parking lot that was believed to be registered to the girlfriend of Kevin Sweeney.
Somerset Police Chief Joe Ferreira said Sweeney -- a Worcester resident -- had an extensive and violent criminal record. The latest warrant for his arrest had been issued last week for an alleged domestic assault.
After determining that Sweeney and the woman were in a room at the motel, Ferreira said police began negotiations with the suspect by phone. He eventually surrendered without incident.
Other guests at the hotel were told to stay in their rooms during the standoff.
