LACONIA, N.H. -- A baby sitter was arraigned Monday on a charge of felony kidnapping after, police said, she tried to abduct a friend's 1-year-old boy in Laconia.
Donna Powell, 36, was arrested late Saturday night. Police said she was baby-sitting for a friend that day and got permission to take the boy shopping in Manchester but never returned.
Police said Powell tried to buy a car in Tilton, N.H., and planned to take the boy to Florida. Officers said that she called her mother on her cell phone in an attempt to get her mother to co-sign for the car loan.
Investigators said that they were able to track Powell down through her cell phone after her mother gave the phone number to police.
"An officer contacted her on the cell phone, kept her on the line and gave directions to officers, and they eventually found her on Interstate 93," Sgt. Chris Adams said.
The boy was returned to his mother unharmed.
A neighbor of Powell's said she was surprised to learn that the boy wasn't Powell's. Police said that days before the alleged kidnapping, Powell told police that the boy was hers, reporting that he was missing.
"When officers actually went there, they determined it wasn't her child and that the child was indeed at the child's home safely with his parents," Adams said.
A public defender asked a judge in Laconia District Court to release Powell on personal recognizance bail, saying that she had no criminal history. But the judge set bail at $10,000 cash.
