When I first became a police officer the firearms instructor advised us to let our kids see and toy with the unloaded gun and teach them the inherent dangers of it (always consider all guns loaded, etc) - the theory is that it would take the fascination and curiosity away ... rather than the kids seeking the gun out when unsupervised.. It worked well with my 3 kids - they have no curiosity anymore and I don't need to worry about them disrespecting a guns power or trying to get at it when I'm not around.. the mystique is no longer there. They've been there , done that and respect it - good advice. An important education.
