Father Charged After Toddler Finds Gun, Kills Himself

http://www.local6.com/news/10400756/detail.html

TAMPA, Fla. -- A father was arrested and charged after his 2-year-old son found a gun and fatally shot himself in the chest Sunday, authorities said.

Timothy Jerome Addison was charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, Tampa police spokesman Larry McKinnon said.

Addison and his son, Timberlan Addison, were playing around the couch when the toddler found the 9mm handgun between the seat cushions. The boy managed to fire a shot before his father took the gun away. The shooting is believed to be an accident, McKinnon said.

"We think it was just the father forgot to put the gun away," McKinnon said.

The child died shortly after he was transported to the hospital.

McKinnon said additional charges against Timothy Addison are pending.

It was not immediately known if Addison had legal representation

What an idiot...too bad the father wasn't shot instead

How these idiots can be so cavalier in the keeping of their weapons is mind-boggling.
My 2 boys haven't even seen my handguns, let alone access to them.
Chree is right, it should have been Timothy the Dipshit that caught the bullet, not the innocent child.

I hear ya Koz, but I think my father had the right idea. When I was about 6-7, my father sat me down with a handgun, explained how to safely handle it, and let me dry-fire it to my heart's content. That removed the mystery and fascination, so I never had the desire to play with a gun again.

Of course, all my guns are under lock & key, but I don't want firearms to be a big mystery to my kids. I want them to know how to safely handle them, and there is no better way than hands-on.

the ass is a convicted felon...hard to remember where you left your pistol when your all strung out (yes..I am assuming the drug thing)

once again, Delta is right on the money. When I first became a police officer the firearms instructor advised us to let our kids see and toy with the unloaded gun and teach them the inherent dangers of it (always consider all guns loaded, etc) - the theory is that it would take the fascination and curiosity away ... rather than the kids seeking the gun out when unsupervised.. It worked well with my 3 kids - they have no curiosity anymore and I don't need to worry about them disrespecting a guns power or trying to get at it when I'm not around.. the mystique is no longer there. They've been there , done that and respect it - good advice. An important education.

I'm with you 100% on that Delta, but my boys just turned 4 and 5 and I didn't want to introduce firearms to them just yet.
In few years and I'll be doing the same thing as your father did with you and mine did with me, its a common-sense approach.

yup, my dad did the same thing when i was about 8. It's proven to work very well

My doaughter is only 3 but she sees me carrying it all the time, she calls it my "gum" and know Daddy needs it for work. Of course if you ask her what Dady does for work she replies "He makes the money"

I agree with the others though, when she gets a little older I will let he handle it with me all she wants, to get the curiousity out of her and to teach her safe handling of it.

Sound advice Delta, same done to me by my father after a shift or while cleaning his weapon. Will pass same on to mine.
