Eight people were shot at a south suburban bar early Saturday morning after a masked gunman walked in and sprayed the packed establishment with bullets, police said.
Two of the injured were taken to Olympia Fields Hospital, two were taken to Christ Hospital and others went to Saint Margaret's Hospital. All were expected to survive.
Inside the Waterfront Pub on Saturday was a mess with bottles on the floor and tables turned over.
Witnesses described the shooting's aftermath inside the marina tavern, located on Croissant Drive, as a scene of total chaos. There were bodies on the floor and victims screaming.
"Me and my friend were at the bar, just chilling, when next thing you know you here pop-pop-pop-pop-pop. Smoke's everywhere. She grabs me, throws me down to the ground, but people are shot everywhere -- in the groin, the back, the legs. It was a massacre," said witness Linda Taylor. "We had no idea what was happening."
The shooter walked in just before 4 a.m. Police said they assume that the gunman had an intended target, but they said he sprayed the bar with bullets and a lot of random people got shot.
"Apparently, he walked up to the front door and opened fire from inside the door," said Burnham Police Chief Peter Belos.
Several people who were there came back Saturday morning to get cars and told NBC 5's Carla Eboh they had friends and relatives in the hospital.
So far, police do not know what triggered the gunman's shooting spree, and that person remains on the loose.
Investigators were gathering evidence at the scene after daybreak Saturday.
"We've interviewed at least 16 customers who were inside the tavern at the time of the shooting, and we're also interviewing the victims," Belos said.
