Prosecutors Say Woman Drove In Violation Of Probation

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- A 20-year-old Connecticut woman who spent 10 days in prison after her car struck and killed a Rhode Island woman will spend another 100 days in prison.

Britney Anderson, of Stonington, accepted a plea bargain Tuesday on charges she violated probation by driving a car in the months after she was released from the York Correctional Institution.

"Two judges told you not to drive, and you did," Superior Court Judge Kevin McMahon told Anderson. "That's what it's about. It's not that we're persecuting you. We have rules, and that's it."

Anderson was sentenced in July 2005 to 10 days in prison and two years' probation after pleading guilty to negligent homicide with a motor vehicle in the death of Sophie Pellegrino. Anderson was also ordered not to drive for a year.

Pellegrino, 73, of Westerly, was walking to morning Mass in 2004 when Anderson struck and killed her.

Anderson has been seen driving several times since the sentence, police said. Anderson, who has denied driving and said police are out to get her, was charged with violating probation.

In March, while Anderson was still barred from driving as part of her probation, Stonington police Officer John Fiore said he saw Anderson driving the same white Mitsubishi Eclipse that killed Pellegrino.

In August, Judge Susan Handy ordered her not to drive again until the probation case was resolved and she scheduled a hearing for next week.

But on Nov. 8, Stonington police again reported seeing Anderson driving the same Mitsubishi, and she was ordered to report to court for Tuesday's bond hearing.

Under terms of Tuesday's deal, Anderson will not be allowed to drive for the first three months and three days when she's released from prison for a second time.

McMahon ordered her to report to court at 10 a.m. Monday to begin serving her sentence, and warned that if she does not show up, he could hit her with six months in prison.
